What do you need when your mood changes like the wind?
Being calm, relaxed, and consistent is a nice place to be. Sadly for many people, this is not their day to day reality. Troubling life experiences, patterns from the past and current mental illness can leave us feeling unstable, with our mood changing really quickly. When this happens feelings can be overwhelming. It can feel like a whirlwind that stops us ever really settling. Your mind might be racing, or you may feel waves of emotion crashing over you. Either way, it is not a good place to be.
So what can be done? One of the most effective ways I have found of helping people with unstable emotions is to show them how to ground themselves into their bodies. When your mind or your emotional state have started to feel unreliable and very changeable, your body is a more stable presence that does not change so much minute to minute. Spending some time paying attention to your breathing, or noticing how each part of your body feels can shift your focus, and provide some relief. The more your practice this, the more of a habit it will become, and the more stable you will feel.
Counselling is a space where you can explore your relationship with your thoughts, emotions and physical feelings, and learn to find an integration between them all that gives you flexibility and stability. A counsellor is there to help you investigate and develop your experience so that you come to know yourself more fully. The goal is to leave you self-sufficient to support yourself and draw on your own network as you become more confident in your ability to cope.
Counselling need not be long term and protracted, you may be able to move a long way towards what you want in a short space of time. It really depends on your goals and symptoms, and how you approach it.
To find a counsellor who is a good fit for you, why not check out counselling directory in your local area and see what is available. It just might help you still those racing winds.
