How small steps lead to big life changes

Is it just me, or do we always want more than we have?

The hot weather is here, and for the first few days, everyone loved it, but now I'm hearing, "The rain was so refreshing, it's just too hot." It’s a small example, but it made me reflect on how our wants and needs often shift, and how we sometimes focus so much on big goals that we forget the power of small steps.

I often hear clients say things like, "I want to be happy." But just like reaching any destination, we need to take small steps to get there. I remind them that we can't move forward if we stay in our seats. The hot weather reminded me that sometimes our wants and needs change, or we can feel intense jealousy when we feel others are progressing quicker or have something we'd like.

However, there are some universal things that we should all strive for, though – in my opinion – and that's to be a happier, healthier, and more confident person who is comfortable being ourselves.

Why small steps matter in goal setting

When we focus only on the big picture, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Breaking goals into small, actionable steps makes them less daunting and more achievable. It’s like reaching a destination by taking one step at a time, rather than expecting to arrive instantly.

So, how do you take those first small steps toward self-improvement? One powerful tool is setting SMART goals.

I often use the SMART framework with clients to help clarify goals and make progress feel manageable. Here’s how to apply it:

Specific

What is it you want to do? Define exactly what you want to achieve. Instead of saying “I want to be happier,” identify a specific action that could bring joy. For example: "I would like to make some friends, and I love reading, so I'll join a book club."

Measurable

Think about how long it is going to take, and when you would like to achieve your goal. Let's look at our book club example again. For instance: "I'm free on Wednesdays, so I'll search for a book club then. When I find one with spaces local to me, I'll go to their next meeting."

Top tip: The longer you wait, the less likely you are to follow through. I was once told, "I was so scared to go, but I'm so glad I did, I loved it!"

Achievable

Look at your specific target. Is it achievable? Let's go back to the book club again. "I've searched the local area and couldn't find a local book club, so I can't achieve my target."

Don't be afraid to start again! Go back to the beginning and ask yourself what else you enjoy. What else could you do?

Realistic

Take a look at your target and have a think, is there any reason why it can't be achieved? For example, there is no point going somewhere with hundreds of people if you don't enjoy crowds. Go easy on yourself and remember those small steps really do count.

Time-bound

Have a time frame in mind, for example, "I'd like to give the book club a try for three months to see if I like it."

For me, and maybe for you too, taking small steps is an ongoing process in learning about yourself. Never be afraid to say, "That didn't work, I'm going to try again." This is not failing, it is exploring who you are and learning to be truthful with yourself.

So, start today by wondering and musing on what it means to take that first small step. The key to success lies in taking that first small step. So, what's holding you back? Take a deep breath, grab a pen and paper, and start exploring what SMART steps you can take towards your goals. I wish you luck on your journey.
