Embracing the joys of spring: A season of renewal

As winter fades and the world bursts into bloom, spring brings a sense of renewal and fresh energy. The longer days, warmer temperatures, and vibrant landscapes can be beneficial for our mood and well-being. By embracing the joys of spring, we can feel uplifted and more connected to ourselves and the world around us.

Boosting your mental health

Here are some ways to make the most of the new season to boost your mental health:

1. Enjoy the sunshine and fresh air

Spending time outdoors can lift your mood and increase energy levels. A short walk in the park, sitting by a lake, or even opening your windows to let in fresh air can bring a sense of calm and positivity. Sunshine also helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which is known to support overall well-being. Focus on the sensation of the cool spring air and the sunlight on your face - what comes up for you?

2. Get moving

Spring is the perfect time to add more movement into your daily routine. Whether it’s a morning walk, a bike ride, or stretching in the garden, physical activity helps reduce stress and boost joy. Find an outdoor activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your day. This can be a quick five minutes in the garden or longer if you have the time. What would it look like to prioritise movement one day?

3. Spend time in nature

“Stop and smell the roses” is a common phrase for a reason. Being in nature can have a calming effect on the mind and body. Take a stroll through a local park or National Trust site, visit a friend, or simply sit under a tree listening to the birds. Observe the changes in nature - flowers blooming, trees turning green, and animals becoming more active. Being present and observing the world around you can bring a sense of joy and mindfulness. What environmental changes have you noticed recently?

4. Start a new hobby

Spring is a great time to explore new activities that bring joy and relaxation. Try gardening, painting, photography, or even journaling outdoors. Engaging in creative or hands-on hobbies can help reduce stress and bring a sense of accomplishment. When was the last time you did something for you?

5. Practice mindfulness

Take a moment to appreciate the little things around you. This could be the scent of blooming flowers, the sound of birds chirping, or the warmth of the sun on your skin. Practicing mindfulness in everyday moments can help you feel more grounded, present and grateful. The 5-4-3-2-1 technique can be a great way to acknowledge and engage different senses. Try this technique when you’re next outside in the sunshine, do you notice more seasonal changes around you?

6. Connect with loved ones

Longer days and warmer weather make it easier to spend quality time with friends and family. Plan a picnic, go for a walk together, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee outside with a loved one. Meaningful connections can bring a sense of belonging and boost emotional wellbeing.

7. Refresh your space

Spring cleaning isn’t just about cleaning and tidying up, it can also help to improve your mood and increase internal motivation levels. Decluttering your home, adding fresh flowers, or rearranging your space can create a more positive and uplifting environment. There is no pressure for this to be a full home refresh, as smaller changes can also lead to sustainable habits. What is one area in your environment that you would like to refresh?

8. Eat fresh and seasonal foods

Spring brings an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that can nourish the body and mind. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables can help you feel more energised and improve overall wellbeing. Remember to always consult your GP or a nutritionist if you’re looking to make changes to your diet.

9. Evaluate New Year goals

As the season embraces new change, it can be a reflective time to look at the goals you may have set yourself earlier in the year. Focusing on the themes of growth and thriving, do the goals aline with your current environment or does something need a refresh? It's okay to re-evaluate where we are and to make changes to support our growth. What does the idea of growth look like to you?

Feeling inspired?

Spring is a season of renewal, growth, and joy. By embracing the opportunities this season provides such as spending time outdoors, moving your body, enjoying nature, and connecting with others, you can boost your mood and improve your overall wellbeing. Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let the energy of spring inspire and uplift you.
