About me

I’m an Integrative Relational Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, working out of a comfortable consulting room in Central Hove. I’ve been involved in supporting individuals in the voluntary sector for my entire professional life, primarily working with men and women leaving prison.

After a positive personal experience with psychotherapy I made the decision to re-train in 2017, and since then I have provided therapy in a University Counselling Department, a low cost community clinic, and an HIV and Sexual Health Therapy Clinic. I currently work as a Mental Health Care Coordinator in the NHS, and I also run a small private Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice where I work primarily with clients on an open-ended and longer term basis.

In my experience, people come seeking counselling or psychotherapy for all sorts of different reasons. Some bring very specific difficulties, and a clear set of goals and needs, while others may have a much vaguer sense of what is wrong.

However you’re arriving, inevitably we would begin with a consultation. As a relational practitioner my focus is always on understanding you not as a category of distress, but as a unique individual, living in a particular context, and bringing with you a personal history.

Together we start to map this out, creating connections as we go. My aim is to provide a warm, professional environment in which it becomes possible to attend to your experience with increasing depth and insight, as well as to offer a space of encounter that is supportive and nurturing. It’s my firm belief that all of us are capable of change, no matter how difficult or despairing our personal circumstances might seem.

While I work with a wide range of presenting issues, my particular interest is in early relational trauma, and embodied-relational approaches to psychotherapy. I believe psychotherapy is a unique opportunity to address developmental deficits and traumas from childhood and adolescence, and that our present day difficulties often carry the echo of these earlier life experiences. For me, these live in our habitual patterns of relating to others, and are most immediately accessed through the present-moment, felt, bodily experience.

I offer an initial consultation free of charge, to give you a risk free opportunity to get a sense of what it might be like to work with me. I ask you to cover the cost of the room hire, which is £15, but I waive the rest of my fee. This gives us a chance to meet with no financial commitment for yourself. We can discuss then what is bringing you to therapy, and I can let you know whether I think I would be able to help you.

If we agree to work together, my standard fee is £65 per 50 minute session, and I can offer sessions on a weekly, or twice-weekly basis, depending on your preferences and circumstances. I also keep a small number of concessionary spaces for people on low incomes, so if you need one of these, please let me know when you contact me.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
