About me

Hi, my name is Sonia and I am an experienced Integrative Therapeutic Counsellor working with clients on a one-to-one basis both online and face-to-face.

Through personal experience, I understand just how difficult it is to navigate life through a prism of opposing ideas, cultures and outlooks on life. I understand the confusion and anxiety this can cause and how it can impact one's mental health and how it can leave one feeling ‘stuck’.

Taking the first step in seeking support can feel overwhelming and I appreciate the courage this takes. I believe every individual is the expert of themselves, therefore my role is to provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where we can explore all parts of your world together.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a Diploma in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Being an Integrative Therapist, I understand that ‘one size does not fit all’ therefore in my work as well as using the core foundation of Person-Centred Therapy I use a variety of modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gestalt and Transactional Analysis (TA) allowing for a more tailored approach.

I work with clients from all walks of life and I currently work in a women’s only centre- working with anything from crippling anxiety to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I also work in an eating distress service in Newcastle where I have experience of working with and not limited to Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). My varied experience allows me to understand a variety of issues and allows me to continuously stay up to date with training through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Other issues I work with include:

  • Anxiety
  • Attachment
  • Bereavement
  • Childhood Trauma
  • Cultural, Religious, Spiritual Issues
  • Depression
  • Low Self-Esteem/Confidence
  • Neurodiversity
  • Relationship Problems

My work involves building trust and working at a pace that feels safe whilst staying culturally sensitive to needs. I have a background and deep understanding of religious and cultural matters - including but not limited to the South-Asian background as well as an interest in cross-cultural matters.

The essence of my work is to empower my clients on their journey to reach their full potential.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy MBACP and I am fully insured to work in both face to face and online settings.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
