About me
There can be moments in all our lives when we might wonder how we got to where we are right now. Perhaps we feel a loss of purpose. Maybe we have lost our sense of self and our self-belief. We might ask, "Who am I? Am I the person I thought I was? Am I who I thought I was meant to be? What does everyone else think of me? How did I get to this place where I feel lost and alone?" We can feel like we are in a goldfish bow with everyone looking at us. We might feel we have become invisible. There may be moments when we feel overwhelmed by regret. We might feel ashamed about the past, anxious about the future. We might feel sad and fearful, unseen, and unheard. It can feel like we are living someone else's life.
I am Sean and I am a counsellor and psychotherapist based between Framlingham and Saxmundham in East Suffolk. I work online and face-to-face at my counselling room in Framlingham. I work with adults and older adults living with chronic health conditions. I support clients experiencing loss, fear and sadness. I really believe that the power for change and growth lies within all of us. My approach of non-judgemental, empathic and compassionate understanding seeks to build a space for my clients in which they feel truly seen and heard. I try to help people to discover their authentic selves, becoming self-accepting and finding new purpose through building deeper meaningful relationships with others. This can mean exploring early life experiences to understand where present day feelings and triggers come from, and how these feelings shape our sense of self, our self-esteem and the way we are with other people. By integrating person-centred, psychodynamic and mindfulness modalities, I draw on key theories such as Attachment, The Drama Triangle and Transactional Analysis together with Multiple Grief Models to help my clients better understand their relationships. These can be relationships with parents, children, partners, colleagues and employers. But most crucially the relationships they have with themselves. Self judgement, repeated negative thought patterns and unconscious triggers that strangle joy and fulfilment. By working alongside my clients with deep empathic understanding, I help them to learn to live with confidence, self-worth and authenticity.
Training, qualifications & experience
I hold a BSc. in Psychology with Counselling and a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I have worked with older people in reablement helping them to adapt to changes in health after discharge from hospital. I have spent several years with a national charity offering emotional and psychological support to people living with autoimmune disease through active listening. My highly rewarding two year placement in Ipswich was spent counselling adolescents and young people. In addition to my counselling work, I manage over 130 volunteers in a mental health service charity and I am a co-author to recent peer-reviewed research papers on the lived experience of patients with autoimmune disease. My counselling experience has included working online and face to face. I am a Registered Member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapist and a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
