About me
Hi, I'm Sadie.
I know that finding a psychological therapist can be a little bit of a minefield. How do you know if one therapist is ‘right’ for you? I hope some of the information below helps to clarify whether I might be helpful to you. If you have questions (and you are welcome to have many) please email me with questions or to request an introductory call where we can talk things through together.
My experience includes working with eating disorders, perinatal trauma and loss, and the various distresses life experiences may leave us with - from social anxiety and low self-esteem to complex PTSD. I’ve also working across the spectrum of ‘common difficulties’ including depression, OCD, perfectionism, burnout, panic and generalised or social anxiety. I welcome creative working where we identify specific needs, such as autism or ADHD.
Difficulties can come from many places - feeling excluded or misunderstood, struggling with grief that others don’t acknowledge, facing loneliness, or being told that your needs are “too much.” Each of these experiences can leave a lasting impact. Together we can explore how life has landed you here, looking at this web site, and find ways to reshape or cope with those experiences in a way that feels supportive for you.
Integrative Psychotherapy
I draw from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focussed Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Counselling skills to validate and understand your difficulties.
That’s a lot of labels for a lot of therapies - don’t worry if that last sentence left you wondering whether I’m speaking another language. I will integrate elements from these approaches according to your needs, treatment goals, history, and personality.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward a state of mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. So essentially, we use EMDR to activate your natural healing processes.
Internal Family Systems Therapy
Internal family systems (IFS) is an increasingly popular form of psychotherapy that considers the mind to be naturally made up of “parts” that take on different roles, similar to an “inner critic” or “inner child”. Some parts carry painful feelings like anger and shame. There are also parts that try to control and protect you from the pain of the wounded parts. The sub-personalities are often in conflict with each other and with one’s core Self, a concept that describes the confident, compassionate, whole person that is at the core of every individual. The goal of IFS is to help clients access “Self” so that they can heal wounded parts and bring their minds into balance.
IFS is an evidence-based practice used to treat a range of mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, autoimmune disease, PTSD, substance misuse, and eating disorders.
