About me

Counselling in York and online.

Person-centred, trauma-informed and neuroaffirming

Sometimes life is difficult because of what's happened to us. Sometimes it's because of what's happening around us. And sometimes we can't quite put our finger on what's wrong, only that something doesn't feel right.

You don't need to have everything figured out before coming to counselling. In fact, that's rather the point.

I'm Rebecca, a person-centred counsellor offering a warm, down-to-earth and non-judgemental space to explore whatever is bringing you to therapy.

I work with people experiencing anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, grief, and the lasting effects of difficult experiences. I have a particular interest in neurodivergence, religious trauma, and the challenges of living with chronic illness.

My approach is rooted in the belief that you are the expert on your own experiences, even when making sense of those experiences feels difficult. My role isn't to tell you how to live your life, hand you a list of things you ought to be doing, or insist that every difficult feeling needs to be turned into a positive one.

Instead, we'll work together to understand what's happening for you, how your experiences may have shaped the way you see yourself and the world, and what you might need moving forward.

I'm a person-centred counsellor with a trauma-informed and neuroaffirming approach. This means I recognise that our experiences don't happen in isolation. Our relationships, health, upbringing, environment and the expectations placed upon us can all influence how we feel and cope.

I don't believe that everyone needs to think, communicate or process emotions in the same way. You won't be expected to make eye contact, find the perfect words, or identify feelings you haven't quite worked out yet.

I also understand that talking about painful experiences isn't automatically therapeutic. We can explore difficult things at a pace that feels manageable, without pressure to revisit experiences before you're ready.

There may be moments of sadness, frustration, uncertainty and, occasionally, humour. Therapy doesn't have to be solemn to be meaningful.

Alongside more general counselling, I have particular interests in supporting:

  • Neurodivergent adults, including autistic and ADHD people, whether formally diagnosed, self-identified or still exploring.
  • People affected by religious trauma, particularly those who have experienced high-control religious environments, loss of faith, shunning or difficulties rebuilding their identity.
  • People living with chronic illness or disability, including the emotional impact of fluctuating health, loss of independence and feeling misunderstood.
  • Parents and carers, including those navigating additional needs, identity changes, overwhelm, pregnancy loss or difficult experiences of motherhood.

You don't have to fit neatly into any of these categories to work with me.

Finding a counsellor can feel daunting, particularly when you're not entirely sure what you need or how to explain it.

I offer counselling in York and online, with a limited number of lower-cost sessions.

If you think we might work well together, you're welcome to get in touch. We can have an initial conversation about what you're looking for and whether I'm the right person to support you.

You don't need a polished explanation. A simple "I'm struggling and I think I need to talk to somebody" is absolutely enough.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

There is a stair lift to the counselling room. For non-ambulant wheelchair users, a step free space is available on the ground floor.
