About me

I am Rebecca.  I work as a Person Centred therapist and deeply appreciate the work.  In Person Centred therapy or counselling, I follow closely what you are experiencing and create a safe space for you to process what you are feeling, to focus on you and work with difficult feelings and situations.  The work is especially effective when the relationship between you and I feels trustworthy and warm, and in my own experience, and through much reading and listening, I know that change can take place where there is room to breathe and be heard without judgement or being given 'answers'.  Process is everything and it isn't an easy path, but it is an enlightening one.

I work with compassion at every turn and twist, with curiosity, and with trust in your knowledge of yourself.

Therapy for me, as a client and as a therapist, is about making space in an imperfect world to return to who we are, and find self-acknowledgement and nurture as we move through the complications we encounter.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a fully qualified Humanistic Counsellor or Therapist and a member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I have a Post-Graduate Diploma in Humanistic Counselling and was privileged to study under the wisdom and guidance of three excellent teachers who taught the value of 'being' rather than 'doing' the principles of Person Centred Counselling.

My experience as an advanced trainee included the privilege of working in connection with charities in York such as Menfulness, Refugee Action York and York Carers.  My private practice takes into consideration access to counselling for all and I will continue to explore and develop this as an ethical approach.

I work with issues affecting men's mental and emotional health (the two being interlinked), women in retirement, young people who are developing authenticity and skills in processing emotions as young adults, bereavement, loss and generalised feeling of anxiety and distress.

My ever-continuing professional development includes focus on relationships and communication. Reading about the links between emotional and physical health, as well as the impact of childhood trauma on quality of adult life.

Favourite authors and researchers - Carl Rogers, Dick Schwarz, Gabor Maté, Brené Brown, and others.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

How do I work? What will this feel like or look like?

The therapeutic space is one in which we work at a pace that suits you, on issues you bring into the room.  This gives you the experience of developing  trust in your decisions and feelings, strengthening your sense of self.  With nurturing questioning and reflection, I will provide space for you to contemplate and process experiences which affect your sense of being ok in the world.

It is a non-judgemental relationship where we piece together parts of the your self, examine any unhelpful narratives and embrace suppressed emotions that act as a barrier to coping with life's painful challenges.
