About me

Hi, my name is Peter Lewis, and my Private Practice is named Trafford Counselling. I help Adults and Children & Young People. My specialist areas of interest are LGBTQIA+ (‘Queer’) people and Neurodivergent people, who feel like outsiders, like they are misunderstood, or who are facing challenges in their social or romantic relationships. Through therapy with me, you will have more confidence to face challenges as you move through everyday life. I work predominantly as a Person-Centred Therapist.

Children & Young People

If you are looking for therapy as a person Under 18, or you are looking for therapy for your child, it is important that you find a therapist who is qualified, like me, to work with this age range. I have taken extensive training with the Counselling & Family Centre (CfC Altrincham), to make sure that my practice with young people is ethical and safe.

Younger clients who have worked with me have faced issues such as social issues and friend groups, exam and academic stress, historic trauma and abuse, bereavement and feeling like an outsider. This can sometimes manifest as not wanting to attend school, shyness, 'acting out', or something else.

I really enjoy working with children and young people because, through our work together, I recognise that I have made a lasting difference in their lives.

LGBTQIA+ / Queer Clients

Are you looking into therapy as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or other type of queer person and you’re searching for a therapist who really understands you, without you needing to over-explain things? Are you perhaps apprehensive that the therapist you choose might not be fully accepting of you? Or are you at a crossroads in a queer relationship and would like to talk your concerns through? Therapy with me could be what you are looking for, because there is nothing more important in therapy than feeling truly valued and accepted. I am a gay man myself, who ‘came out’ around the year 2002. I remember what it felt like to not feel sure of myself, and I understand the daily complications that come with a queer identity. I also understand what it feels like to be in a world where the general public might not be accepting of my identity, and I recognise how that applies to much of the queer community even today.

Neurodivergent People

Do you have ADHD, Autism, or Borderline Personality Disorder (EUPD), and are you looking for a therapist with lived experience who will fully understand your experiences without judgement? Do you have issues with emotional regulation, rejection sensitivity, executive dysfunction, or do you sometimes think that socially you feel ‘not quite right?’ Are you late diagnosed, and are going through a grief stage about how your life may have looked if you were diagnosed earlier in life? These are just a few of the issues my neurodivergent clients have brought to therapy, and through our work we have helped to calm those worries, to find ways to regulate, and to feel more self-confident. I personally was diagnosed with ADHD in my 30s around the year 2017 and have made several changes in my life to really make it worth living again. The reason that I specify the three neurodivergences above is because those are closest to my own lived experience and personal understanding. I am neuro-affirming, meaning that therapy with me will never try to ‘train you’ out of your neurodivergent wiring, but I will help you to live life more fully as your authentic self.

Addictions and Substance Misuse

Are you stuck in one place because you have been drinking a lot or taking drugs? Is it another addiction like sex or social media? Have you tried some tips that you have found online and not been able to implement them, or they just have not worked? I am here to tell you that there is a way out, and you can break free from addiction and rebuild your life. I have overcome drug addiction myself (5 years sobriety as of September 2025), and I have two years' experience working in rehab and drug addiction services. You don’t have to face this alone.

If any of these apply to you, feel free to either Contact Me using the details at the top of the page, or visit my website, also at the top of the page, for more information.
