About me

Wild Waves Therapy

"Healing is not about fixing who you are, but reclaiming all that you are becoming"

Hello, my name is Niko (they/them) and I am based in Nottingham. I am a Creative Arts Psychotherapist, an accredited Dance Movement Psychotherapist and a registered member of the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy UK – (ADMP UK).

As a non-binary and neuroqueer therapist navigating disability, I am committed to offering a compassionate and holding space where clients are met exactly where they are. I welcome and honour each person’s experiences, stories, identities, and needs with respect and care.

I have worked across a range of mental health services and charities, supporting children, young people, and adults — including survivors of sexual and domestic violence and those with complex lived experiences and social disadvantages. I have also co-facilitated therapeutic groups and outdoor sessions as part of community projects, where I have witnessed the power of coming together in community and through shared experiences. I have recently trained as a NatureWell Nature and Health Facilitator with Natural Academy and I am exploring how therapy can unfold in outdoor spaces, weaving in the rhythms of the natural world.

My approach in therapy is integrative and experiential. It is grounded in social justice and liberatory frameworks, and is informed by systemic, existential and phenomenological theories, as well as attachment and developmental psychology. I also engage in research and advocacy around trauma-informed, sensory-informed, nature-based and culturally responsive embodied and relational practices, which continue to shape and deeply inspire my work.

I hold a deep trust that healing emerges in communities and through relationships — with ourselves, with others, and with the living world around us. My relational way of working invites people to explore ways of reconnecting with their own rhythms and senses, while gently befriending their nervous system at a pace that feels as safe as possible, and navigating life beyond trauma and systemic inequalities.

During sessions, movement, gestures, rhythms, metaphors, sensory exploration, creative expression, nature connectedness and play may all become part of the process. These dynamic elements can support body and emotional awareness, meaning-making, and reflection on both present and past experiences — always guided by what feels safe and manageable for you. I am also interested in exploring together how personal and collective narratives shape our experiences and how we respond to them.

I adhere to the ADMP's code of ethics and professional conduct and I am an active member of ADMP UK’s LGBT+ network, where I connect with fellow practitioners and hold intersectionality at the heart of my practice. I am also committed to ongoing self-reflection, exploring my positionality and challenging my own biases, so I can continue to offer an ethical, accountable, and just therapeutic space.

Outside of therapy, I find joy and restoration in nature, the sea, cooking, dancing, writing, creating, volunteering in community allotment projects and connecting with my partner, friends and the wider communities I belong to.

I offer both short- and long-term therapy for children, young people, adults, and also joint sessions with couples, polycules, and families. I currently have availability for in-person sessions on Mondays (early afternoon) and Tuesdays (afternoon and evening) at a therapy space in Nottingham city centre, which is accessible by public transport and is wheelchair accessible. I also have availability for in-person sessions in Belper on Fridays afternoons and evenings (unfortunately the space is not wheelchair accessible). There is also the possibility of holding sessions in accessible outdoor settings; practicalities, as well as considerations around safety and confidentiality, can be discussed further together.

To help make therapy more accessible, I have limited availability for reduced concession rates based on income and financial circumstances. If you are interested in this option, please mention it when you get in touch. I also offer a free 30-minute initial discovery session (online), where we can explore whether working together feels right for you.

I look forward to hearing from you and working together.

Warmly,

Niko
