About me
Dr Natalie Kanakam is a Senior Clinical Psychologist with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a PhD in psychological medicine. She has worked with adults, families, couples, children and young people.
Natalie has worked most extensively with young people and children. She currently works at the specialist children’s hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital (‘GOSH’). In her work she provides consultation and works with children who have neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and ADHD. She has also worked with and provided Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and behavioural interventions for young people who have anxiety, depression, medically unexplained symptoms and Tourette's syndrome. Prior to joining GOSH Natalie worked at the Michael Rutter Centre (part of the Maudsley Hospital) for young people and children with eating disorders, ranging from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder using CBT therapies and family therapy approaches.
Natalie has also worked with adults providing therapy for depression, anxiety long-term health conditions and obsessive-compulsive disorder. When working with adults in therapy, she draws on CBT, dialectical behaviour therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy approaches.
Prior to completing her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Natalie, completed her Ph.D. in psychological medicine from King's College London. Natalie is active in conducting research to support the development of more effective therapies and understanding of mental health problems. She has published peer reviewed articles and presented at International Conferences to disseminate her research.
As a psychologist, Natalie is passionate about exploring the needs of the individuals and what they feel is important to them. Her clients' well-being and how they experience therapy are of utmost importance. Natalie always hopes to provide her clients with an open and safe space where they can explore their difficulties and life goals that they would like to work toward. Whilst also working with individual differences and identities using a non-judgemental stance that is guided for the client. Natalie’s career and academic success can all be traced back to her desire to help people and to provide empathy and understanding for people in need.
