About me

My name is Martha and I offer Couple, individual, family and teenagers counselling. I am qualified to work with Psychosexual therapy and also Supervision. I am a fully qualified Relate trained counsellor. I work in the East Grinstead area. I have over 30 years of experience providing therapy for couples, individuals, families and teenagers. I am also qualified to work in Psychosexual therapy with particular expertise in sexual addiction. I have worked extensively with teenagers that experience problems relating to self-harm and anxiety issues. I am also able to provide therapeutic help to adults and teenagers (over the age of 12) on the autistic spectrum and Aspergers.

I also offer supervision to trainees and fully qualified counsellors and Psychosexual therapists.

Deciding to find some support with a problem is the first step towards change. My aim is to provide clients with a safe and supportive environment in which they can feel at ease to explore their life and any difficulties they are experiencing. Therapy is a journey in which participants make an agreement to work together by listening, experiencing feelings and exploring life encounters and how these aspects are affecting their quality of life. Only by taking on this journey can people find more positive ways of managing life and find happiness.

Couple Counselling

I am a member of (BACP) British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and of (COSRT) College of Psychosexual Therapists. The training that I have undergone has been with  Relate, University College London and The Family Institute. My experience of working with couples is extensive in all areas of relationship difficulties. These include communication difficulties and managing conflict / possible resentments that may create an atmosphere of emotional distance between partners. Managing the different stages of life in the relationship such as retirement, affairs and birth of children can be difficult for couples. Sometimes illnesses and long term health difficulties can create disruption in the couple and family relationship.

Couples and individuals that are in the autistic spectrum can find the different changes in a relationship very difficult to process and adjust. Therapy can help them to understand these behaviours and explore different modalities of managing them.

Counselling Teenagers

In my work with teenagers, I emphasise the exploration of their experiences of living in a society in which they find lots of stresses in their life. Although they may already have positive ways of coping they may feel stuck or not be able to deal with these challenges. This may be because of anxiety problems, family issues or personal difficulties. Therapy will help them to explore their emotional and mental processes and find alternative behaviour and understanding of their emotions.

Psychosexual Therapy.

Many individuals and couples experience difficulties in this area of their lives maybe because of past experiences, addictive behaviour or personal challenges. I work with a modality that is based on Cognitive behavioural therapy and the cycle of addiction.

Supervision.

I have experience of working as a therapist in many modalities as outlined above. This has given me the ability to understand the therapeutic endeavour through many lenses. I work in a systemic, psychodynamic, behavioural and person-centered approach. I am able to supervise individual practitioners and also provide group supervision.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

COSRT
College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT)

COSRT is the UK’s leading membership organisation for therapists specialising in sexual and relationship issues.

All members must abide by their Code of Ethics and the performance of accredited members is regularly monitored.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
