About me

If you are struggling with issues that are preventing you from living your life to the full, perhaps talking to someone could help you to begin to change that.

I’m Kay, an integrative, humanistic counsellor. My counselling practice is called ‘Yellow Wood Counselling’. The name comes from the first line of a poem, ‘The Road not Taken,’ by Robert Frost which is about making choices and decisions and how these might shape what comes next. Quite often, it can be a struggle to know what road to take and scary to imagine what the outcome might be if we follow any one particular path. Many people may experience a crisis point, an event or a challenge along the way and need help to move forward. Sometimes, it can seem like things have been stuck for a long time and a change of direction looks as if it is impossible.

Coming to counselling can give you the space and time that you need to work through challenging experiences and issues. It is a chance to share and process problems, to be heard and to feel understood; to build better self-awareness and self-care and to identify and practice new strategies for coping with difficult situations and emotions. Being able to talk to someone outside your personal life in this way can often provide some relief.

As a counsellor, my role is not to give you advice but rather to offer a quiet space where you can speak in confidence, without judgement, while I offer my full attention and presence. Being supported in this way can help you to develop new insights and find acceptance or your own solutions.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified integrative counsellor with a Level 4 diploma in therapeutic counselling.

I am registered with the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and work in accordance with their ethical framework/guidelines.

My core theoretical approach is Humanistic.

I also have a PGCE qualification and many years of experience working in schools which has given me some insight into what children and young people might be facing in their lives as well as the challenges that teachers and other professionals in education work with every day.

My voluntary work for an addiction service has also heightened my awareness and understanding of some of the difficulties that people can come up against when they are struggling with dependence issues.

I have worked as a counsellor in a private setting as well as with an agency that reached out to support vulnerable members of the community. During the COVID pandemic, I volunteered with ‘Project 5’ which offered support for NHS workers during that critical time.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
