MA Counselling and Psychotherapy, MBACP

About me

I know reaching out for support can be difficult and finding the right therapist in a directory is pretty daunting! A sea of faces that look more or less like nice people and endless descriptions trying to guess why you might be coming for therapy - how do you choose?!

The truth is a big part of what makes therapy effective is the relationship between the therapist and the client and as with all relationships not all people are well matched. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and think that with time you could feel safe enough to explore the more vulnerable parts of yourself.

The only way to really know that is to meet them and see how you feel. That’s why I offer a free 30 minute video meeting to give you a better idea of what it would be like to work together. I also recommend meeting a few therapists and seeing what feels best for you. Don’t worry, I won’t be offended if you don’t pick me! You deserve to find the right support and that’s important to me too, even if it doesn’t end up being me.

So please feel free to send me an email or give me a text or a call to arrange a time for a zoom meeting. In the meantime I’ll try my best to describe how I work…

My main aim as a therapist is to help you understand and accept yourself and to feel connected to your feelings and authentic desires for life. We can do this in a number of ways:

  • Processing difficult experiences from the past
  • Looking at patterns in your life and where they come from
  • Exploring what is blocking you from doing what you want
  • Noticing what it feels like in our relationship and how that might relate to other relationships in your life
  • Doing creative experiments to explore your experience and test out different ways of being
  • Exploring different parts of yourself that may contradict each other
  • Tuning into physical sensations in your body and what they might mean
  • Exploring how your desires or ways of being may differ from social norms and expectations and what impact that has on you.

How we work together will depend entirely on what feels right and helpful to you; and what you want to get out of therapy. The most important thing is that we build a safe and trusting relationship and we can work out together what feels helpful for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have an MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy from UWE, which taught a relational approach integrating Person-Centred, Psychodynamic and Gestalt modalities.

I have worked in specialist counselling agencies in addiction at the Swan Project; and in sexual abuse at Kinergy in Bristol.

I’ve also worked in mental health in the NHS in the Recovery Team.

I’m a registered member of the BACP and adhere to their ethical code of practice.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
