About me
Hello and welcome. My name is Katherine Coates and I am a qualified Person Centred therapist. My journey to become a qualified counsellor started after I entered therapy myself so am well aware of how terrifying taking the first steps in asking for help can be.
Therefore, I aim to offer a safe space where you feel accepted and valued enough that you can reveal your vulnerabilities without fear of judgement.
I am largely non directive and believe in empowering you to direct the focus and pace of our work together.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a qualified person centred therapist with 13 years of counselling experience.
In 2025 I acquired a post graduate certification in Trauma Sensitive Approaches to Psychological Wellbeing.
For the last 5 years I have worked privately and have experience in a wide range of issues that are listed in my profile. Prior to this I offered counselling to people living with HIV and have also practiced in a substance use service.
Aside from my counselling work I have 22 years experience of working in substance use services including prison and the community where I have worked with a complex array of issues including mental health, physical health, poverty, criminal behaviour, homelessness, abuse and violence.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
