About me

I am John Ridley. I offer evidence-based psychotherapeutic counselling and coaching, informed by rigorous training, the latest research and my own experience of what works. This is underpinned by compassion and empathy, ensuring that our therapeutic relationship will be meaningful and focused on your needs and goals.

Whatever issues you are facing, I will work to relieve your distress in the most effective way possible - drawing on evidence-based approaches. My core training is person-centred (Humanistic), with graduate-level training at the University of Exeter in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mental health assessment. I may also draw upon Gestalt, Transactional Analysis and Psychodynamic approaches.

I take a therapeutic approach to coaching, building on my own leadership experience in business change consultancy, finance, entrepreneurship and education. I have further professional development in Positive Psychology from the University of Oxford. I always work with clients in a way that is tailored to their needs and aspirations, for example often combining CBT, motivational interviewing and Solution-Focused Therapy.

During our initial assessment appointment, we will explore what you are seeking to achieve through our working together. For some people, this is time-limited with an agreed number of sessions. Others prefer to take a more open-ended approach. Having worked in the NHS (South London and Maudsley Trust), private medical insurance and private practice, I am open to the flexibility you need.

As an individual member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I am bound by their ethical framework. I engage in both weekly supervision and personal therapy, to ensure that my work is safe and optimised to the needs of my diverse client base.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
