About me
Are you managing your life rather than living it? Perhaps things look fine on the outside while inside you feel stuck, numb or disconnected. It might show up in relationships, in intimacy, at work, or in a growing sense that this is not the life you were meant to have.
I specialise in addiction, codependency and adaptive behaviours, many of which are solutions to something older: for example early relationships that asked you to be someone or something you weren't, or a sense that you were only accepted if you behaved 'properly'.
The anxiety, the low mood, and the feeling of being stuck, hidden or burnt out come from the same place. Working with the root causes is where change tends to last.
Starting therapy can seem daunting, but the rewards can be great if you take that risk. I'll help you feel safe and secure as you work at your own pace to figure out what's best for you and what you'd like to address.
Who am I?
I'm Joel, a BACP-Accredited therapist. My style is warm, grounded and professional. I pay close attention to how people experience themselves and others, and support clients as their confidence and self-trust grow.
I came to this work through my own recovery from addiction and years of my own therapy. I know how much of a person can stay hidden, and how much can change when you no longer have to.
I have extensive experience working with:
- addictions and recovery (including 12-step frameworks)
- men’s issues
- *codependency and relationship difficulties
*Codependency refers to patterns of over-focusing on others at the expense of one’s own needs and self-worth.
Where does therapy happen?
I offer:
- In-person therapy in Clapham, London and Tonbridge, Kent.
- Online therapy: Meet me wherever you are via Zoom.
What if I'm neurodivergent?
I work with all neurotypes. Adults who experience autistic, ADHD or OCD characteristics, whether diagnosed, self-identified or still working it out, are a regular part of my practice. I bring my own lived experience of neurodivergence to that work, alongside ongoing CPD, and I adapt how sessions run to suit how you think and process: pacing, communication style, structure, processing time and sensory needs.
What would we do in therapy?
I'm what's called an integrative therapist, which means I don't apply one method to everyone. I tailor our work to your individual needs and preferences. Our sessions may involve:
- exploring how past relationships and experiences have shaped your sense of self
- noticing patterns of self-criticism, anxiety or over-responsibility
- developing greater emotional awareness and self-regulation
- gently building self-trust, boundaries and confidence over time
I draw on person-centered, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness-based approaches, as well as creative methods when helpful.
What would be the benefits of our therapy work?
Therapy can support you to develop greater self-awareness, emotional understanding and resilience, as well as new ways of relating to yourself and others.
Many people find that, over time, this leads to increased self-trust, confidence and a greater sense of choice in how they respond to life’s challenges.
How can coaching help in therapy?
I am also a certified professional coach. Some clients choose to integrate coaching sessions after completing therapy, to support future goals, decision-making or life transitions.
Therapy and coaching are distinct approaches, and we would always discuss together what feels most appropriate for you.

Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
