About me

Hi, I’m Jo.

If you’ve found your way here, you might be wondering whether therapy could actually help you. Or maybe you’re just having a look around, getting a feel for different therapists and seeing who you connect with.

Either way, I’m glad you’re here ☺︎

I’m a qualified Person-Centred Psychotherapist, but before I’m a therapist, I’m just a person too. I have my own life, experiences, good days and bad days, and I definitely don’t have everything figured out!

I’m quite down-to-earth and I don’t think therapy needs to feel overly formal or clinical. I’m a real person sitting across from another real person, and I think that matters. Especially when you’re trusting someone with the parts of yourself that you might not usually show people.

So, if the thought of therapy makes you feel a little awkward, nervous or unsure what you’re supposed to say, you’re definitely not alone.

You don’t need to arrive with a list of things you want to talk about. You don’t need to know exactly why you feel the way you do. And you certainly don’t need to have everything worked out before you walk through the door. You can cry. Swear. Laugh. Lose your train of thought. Sit in silence. Tell me you have absolutely no idea what to say. You can just turn up as you are.

What brings you here?

Maybe things have been feeling a bit difficult lately. Perhaps you know something doesn’t quite feel right, but you’re not entirely sure why. Maybe you’re struggling with your relationships, your confidence, your emotions, or simply feeling a bit lost or disconnected from yourself.

Sometimes there’s an obvious reason we’re struggling. Sometimes there isn’t. And sometimes the things that affect us most are things we’ve become so used to that we don’t even realise they’re shaping the way we think, feel and relate to other people.

You might find yourself overthinking, putting other people first, struggling to say no, feeling like you’re never quite enough, being hard on yourself, or finding yourself repeating patterns in relationships that leave you wondering why you keep ending up in the same place. Or maybe none of those things quite fit. You might simply know that you don’t feel like yourself and want somewhere to slow things down and make sense of what’s going on.

You don’t need a diagnosis, a huge story or a perfect explanation for why you’re here. Whatever has brought you to this point, we can start there.

How I work

I work from a Person-Centred approach, which means I’m not going to sit there with all the answers or tell you how you should live your life.

You know yourself better than I do. You are the expert on you.

My role is to listen properly, walk alongside you and help you make sense of what’s going on. We can explore your experiences, relationships, feelings and patterns at a pace that feels right for you. There’s no judgement and no expectation that you need to perform being “okay” in our sessions.

Therapy isn’t about fixing you. You aren’t broken. It’s about having somewhere you can slow things down, be honest about how things really feel and perhaps begin to understand yourself with a little more compassion.

I’m particularly interested in exploring things such as self-esteem, confidence, shame, people-pleasing, boundaries, body image, relationships and attachment. I’m also interested in the impact that difficult experiences — including the smaller things that can sometimes be hard to explain — can have on us and the way we relate to ourselves and other people.

But you don’t need to fit neatly into any of those categories to come to therapy with me. I'm always happy to help with whatever is going on for you.

And a little bit more about me…

I think choosing a therapist is about more than qualifications and experience. It’s about finding someone you feel you could actually talk to.

I’m not going to pretend I have all the answers, and I’m definitely not perfect! I have my own struggles, my own experiences and plenty of days where I’m just getting on with things like everyone else. I think that’s important to remember when you’re sitting opposite a therapist. You’re not talking to someone who has life completely figured out. You’re talking to another person who is there to listen, understand and make space for you.

You don’t have to pretend with me.

I offer private, online therapy to adults across the UK, providing a safe and confidential space where you can explore whatever is going on for you, at your own pace.

If something in you is telling you that things don’t quite feel right, that you’re tired of feeling the way you do, or that you’d simply like to understand yourself a little better, that can be enough reason to reach out.

If you’d like to find out a little more about me, you can also have a look at my website or social media using the links above.

I’d be very happy to hear from you. ☺︎

If you haven’t heard back from me within a couple of days, please check your spam folder too, as sometimes messages can find their way in there.

Training, qualifications & experience

My experience has included working within mental health hospital settings, as well as providing therapeutic support to clients in university and online settings.

I have supported people with a range of personal difficulties and life experiences, developing valuable experience in building therapeutic relationships, listening to what clients bring to therapy and working collaboratively to explore what is important to them.

My experience within mental health settings has given me insight into the different ways people can experience and respond to emotional and psychological difficulties, and the importance of seeing the person rather than simply focusing on a diagnosis or presenting problem.

I’m a qualified Person-Centred Psychotherapist and continue to develop my knowledge through ongoing learning and professional development, particularly around trauma, relationships, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.

I bring warmth, curiosity and a genuine interest in understanding each person I work with, recognising that everyone’s experiences and needs are different.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
