About me

Counsellor & Psychotherapist:

Hello, I’m Joanna — a qualified and experienced Counsellor and Psychotherapist, registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I work with individuals and couples, offering professional, confidential counselling in a supportive and non-judgemental space.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or emotionally stuck, you’re not alone. I support both individual clients and couples who may be struggling with life pressures, relationship difficulties, fertility challenges, or long-standing emotional patterns. Sometimes the cause feels clear; other times there’s just a sense that something isn’t right. Counselling provides a safe space to explore these feelings openly and begin creating meaningful change.

How I Work with Individuals and Couples
I work using a pluralistic approach to counselling, meaning therapy is tailored to your specific needs — whether you’re coming as an individual or as a couple. I recognise that no single therapeutic model works for everyone, and that individuals and relationships require different kinds of support at different times.

Our work may draw on:

Person-centred counselling
Psychodynamic therapy                                                                                    Existential therapy
CBT-informed therapy
For individual therapy, we may focus on emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, past experiences, or present-day challenges.
For couples counselling, sessions offer a neutral, supportive space to explore communication patterns, emotional disconnection, conflict, trust issues, or shared stressors such as fertility or life transitions.

I offer a warm, down-to-earth, and collaborative therapeutic relationship, where all voices are respected and heard.

Specialist Areas
I work with individuals and couples experiencing:                                            Fertility and infertility concerns — including IVF, donor conception, miscarriage, and the emotional impact of assisted reproduction (ART)
Relationship difficulties and communication breakdown
Anxiety, stress, and burnout
Depression and persistent low mood
Low self-esteem and self-worth
Childhood trauma and unresolved family dynamics
Whether you’re seeking counselling on your own or as a couple, we’ll work at a pace that feels safe, respectful, and supportive.

 Professional Standards
As a BACP-registered therapist, I work in line with the highest professional and ethical standards and attend regular clinical supervision to ensure safe and effective practice. I welcome individuals and couples from all backgrounds and am committed to offering an inclusive, affirming therapeutic space.

If you’re considering individual counselling or couples therapy and would like to explore whether I’m the right therapist for you, you’re very welcome to get in touch. Taking the first step can feel daunting — but you don’t have to take it alone.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am an experienced Counsellor and Psychotherapist with a broad professional background that spans healthcare, mental health, and the corporate sector. With over a decade of experience as a midwife in the NHS, followed by a transition into a senior executive role, I bring a deep and compassionate understanding of life transitions, pressure, responsibility, and emotional resilience.

Alongside my private counselling practice, I volunteer with Mind, where I specialise in bereavement counselling, loss, and grief support. This work continually informs and strengthens my therapeutic practice, particularly when supporting clients through profound emotional change, uncertainty, or recovery after loss.

Education & Professional Training
I hold a First Class Honours BSc in Counselling from University of East London, providing me with a strong academic and clinical foundation in counselling and psychotherapy.

I also hold a Diploma of Higher Education in Midwifery from St George’s, University of London, where I trained and practised as a midwife. This background gives me particular insight into the emotional and physical aspects of health, fertility, pregnancy, loss, and major life change — areas that often bring people into therapy.

My Therapeutic Approach
I work as a pluralistic therapist, meaning I believe therapy should be flexible, responsive, and tailored to each individual or couple. Rather than relying on a single model, I integrate a range of evidence-based approaches, including:

Person-centred therapy
Existential therapy
Psychodynamic therapy
CBT-informed counselling
This allows me to adapt our work to suit your unique needs, goals, and challenges, whether you’re seeking individual counselling or couples therapy.

What You Can Expect
In our sessions, you are an active participant in shaping the therapeutic process. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and I recognise that your needs may evolve over time. Together, we will regularly review what feels most helpful and adjust our approach to ensure therapy remains meaningful and effective.

Whether we are exploring past experiences, working through present difficulties, or focusing on future change, my aim is to offer a thoughtful, supportive, and professionally grounded therapeutic space that supports lasting emotional wellbeing and real personal growth.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
