About me

My name is Jane Evans, and I am a qualified Psychotherapist and Counsellor.  I work with adults struggling with loss, disconnect, low self-esteem, anger, burnout, anxiety and depression.

I frequently work with trauma.  This might be trauma with a 'little t', meaning emotional distress due to the cumulative impact of multiple events such as bullying, verbal abuse, emotional neglect, criticism or managing neurodivergence.    I am also qualified and experienced in working with sexual abuse and major trauma, including PTSD.

It is worth noting that panic attacks, gambling, substance abuse or emotionally shutting down are often manifestations of trauma.

I have a particular interest in relational work, family dynamics and attachment.  Attachment theory explains how a disrupted bond with our main caregiver can impact our ability to feel safe within relationships.  This can also result in challenges within the parenting of our children.

It is important that you trust the therapist you choose: a safe space helps us to explore ourselves at a deeper level.  My training and life experience inform a broad-minded, non-judgemental acceptance of whatever you choose to bring to therapy.

About counselling and psychotherapy

We live in a fast-paced world and many of us find ourselves floundering at times.  You might feel stuck or alone in your situation, perhaps caught up in repetitive ways of thinking, struggling to come to any solution.  Our emotions are clues to what is really going on for us.  I will help you to go beneath the surface of the problem and understand what is driving your thoughts, feelings or behaviours.

Research proves that the brain continues to grow and evolve in response to life's experiences, building new networks.  Psychotherapy enhances this by introducing new ways of thinking.  You will find more detail around this on my website.   Once we have worked out the patterns that hold us back, we can move towards becoming the best version of ourselves and gaining control over the triggers we once had.

The way I work

I'm a humanistic therapist which means that focus is given to self-exploration and personal growth.  I work a lot with feelings.

My integrative approach uses Transactional Analysis to better understand relationships between yourself and others; what is the dyad or how are you influencing one another’s responses.  There is more about this on my website.

I also draw on psychoanalytic theory.  This looks at childhood and past experience to identify and understand behavioural or relational patterns.

I will share some psychological information as we go along.  Cognitive behavioural techniques can also be helpful to ease physical symptoms of stress initially, such as panic attacks.

What To Expect

The process is not linear or formulaic, and we work at a pace that is both comfortable and safe for you.  The time is yours to talk about anything you wish.

The first step is to book a free consultation.  This will give you the opportunity to tell me why you are seeking psychotherapy and give us the chance to see what it will be like to work together.  You might then take some time to consider whether I am right for you.

If we decide to continue working together, we will then choose a regular day and time every week for 50 minutes. This helps us secure a commitment to the work and create a trusting relationship.

The first session will see us getting a roadmap or deeper grasp of the problem.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
