About me

On paper, everything is good. You're reliable and you're capable. But there's something that you can't quite figure out, its a tightness in your chest, or throat when you think about your relationship or your career. Then, almost instinctively, there's a pull that makes you check out. You can maybe describe the pattern, and you've got insight into what it is that happens, but describing it hasn't changed it.

This may feel like a failure will-power and motivation, but its just that an intellectual understanding of a problem that doesn't live in the head, is destined to fail. Most of the men I work with have spent years thinking about what they feel instead of feeling it. the result is the same thing just in slightly different arena: relationships, work, how they treat themselves.

The work I do is about closing that gap. Slowing things down enough that what's actually happening in your body, underneath the reactions and stories, becomes something you can work with rather than something that is running the show without your permission.

What the work is

Direct, honest conversations with no performance from either of us, that's the basis. We pay attention to what happens when you talk and we use that as the material. What part of your body tightens, what do you skip past, and what do you laugh off, as well as other data points.

Over time, you will develop the capacity to do this for yourself. But this is a problem of structure that was built in relationship with others and needs to be rectified in relationship.

Who I work with

Primarily men, but not exclusively. People come to me around relationships, anxiety, anger and shutdown, grief, trauma, confidence, masculinity, sexuality, attachment, addiction, and the kind of low-grade drop in mood that could easily go unnoticed but makes a huge difference to your quality of life.

How we can meet

I offer in-person sessions at Argyle House in Exeter, online sessions via video, and walk-and-talk therapy — either along the Quay in Exeter or in Haldon Forest.

Let's talk.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
