About me
Hi, I'm Gemma, am experienced counsellor, EMDR therapist, EMDR Supervisor and Co-Director of 'HealthWise Leeds' (therapy centre).
I have over 12 years clinical counselling experience, and have worked in mental health services for over 20 years.
You may be here because you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or struggling after a difficult experience.
Perhaps you’re dealing with the impact of trauma, anxiety, or managing grief that feels hard to move through alone.
Do you find it difficult to talk to friends and family, because they don't know what to say, how to help, they don't understand, or you feel embarrassed to talk to them?
I offer trauma-informed counselling and EMDR therapy, supporting adults who are navigating the impact of past experiences, loss, or life changes.
I specialise in trauma therapy using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), a well-researched approach that helps process traumatic memories and reduce distress.
Many people seek EMDR therapy when they are experiencing:
- PTSD or complex trauma
- Anxiety or panic linked to past experiences
- Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts
- Feeling constantly on edge or emotionally overwhelmed.
I also specialise in grief counselling and bereavement support, including losses that are often misunderstood or not fully recognised.
This includes:
- Bereavement and loss of a loved one
- Pet bereavement counselling
- Miscarriage, infertility, or health-related loss
- Relationship breakdown or estrangement
- Life changes and identity loss
I have a particular passion for supporting disenfranchised grief - when your loss isn’t fully acknowledged by others, which can make it feel even more isolating.
As a pet bereavement counsellor, I understand how deeply painful losing an animal companion can be. This type of grief is real and deserving of support.
How I Work
I offer a warm, non-judgemental space where you can talk openly and at your own pace.
My approach is integrative and trauma-informed, meaning I adapt how I work depending on your needs. Alongside EMDR, I draw on counselling approaches that support emotional understanding, self-compassion, and long-term change.

Therapy often works best when sessions are held regularly and ideally weekly. This continuity can help create safety, focus and momentum in the work. That said, I know that life is rarely straightforward. Work patterns, caring responsibilities, or financial considerations can make this difficult. On some occasions, I may be able to offer fortnightly appointments, depending on what you are coming to therapy for.
Sessions must be paid in advance to confirm your appointment.
