Psychodynamic counselling in Bath BA1, Somerset and online

About me

Welcome.  If you’re reading this, you may be experiencing difficulties with your mental health - either because of a specific event, or for what may seem like no obvious reason.  The first step in contacting someone for help can often be the hardest and there are a bewildering number of options to choose from.

Who am I, and how can I help?

My name is Fran, and I'm a BPC- and BACP-registered psychodynamic counsellor, offering regular sessions for adults (18+) either in-person in central Bath or online via Zoom.  I have experience working with a range of emotional problems, including anxiety, bereavement, relationship troubles, loneliness and unresolved childhood issues.  You can read on to find out a bit more about me and how I work, or you can get in touch by clicking on the email or website buttons above or by emailing directly at info@frandawelane.co.uk.  You can also book a brief introductory phone conversation, again using the button above - I aim to respond within 1 working day.

How do I work?

I work psychodynamically, which means not just exploring what’s happening in the present, but also thinking about how your ways of reacting and relating today may be linked unconsciously to your past.  On your own, it can be very hard to identify and make sense of how these unconscious patterns may be continuing to affect you.  This can potentially lead to unhelpful patterns of behaviour, relationship and emotional problems, or difficulty in grieving losses.

What might a session be like?

I offer in-person sessions in comfortable and secure therapy rooms located in central Bath (BA1 1RH) with nearby parking, or online via Zoom.  In these sessions, through a collaborative, empathetic and non-judgmental therapeutic process, together we can begin to understand more about your unconscious world and bring it into your awareness.

Sessions tend to be led by you, and are likely to feel different to any other social interaction.  I offer a confidential space where whatever you bring - whether you think it’s important or not - is seen, heard and valued.  Our relationship in the room is also part of the process.  As the work unfolds, together we can help you to make more sense of who you are and how you feel, helping foster self-compassion and effecting lasting change.

I often suggest 3-4 initial sessions so we can both get a sense of whether my approach would suit you, either in-person or online depending on how you would prefer to access counselling.  Once we decide to work together, we would meet at the same time each week for a regular 50-minute session, on an open-ended basis.

Get in touch

If this sounds like something you'd like more information about, or if would like to book an introductory chat or initial session, do get in touch by clicking on the email or website buttons above, or by emailing me directly at info@frandawelane.co.uk.  You can also book a brief introductory phone conversation above - I aim to respond within 1 working day.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), two of the UK’s main psychotherapy training and registering bodies.  These registrations involved completion of a rigorous dual-accredited training over several years, as well as the requirement for personal therapy, meaning that I have my own experience of what it’s like to be sitting in your chair.

I am a member of Wessex Counselling & Psychotherapy, where I also undertake initial assessments and work as a personal tutor on the Foundation course.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
