About me

Hi! I’m Emma and I’m a person-centred therapist who works exclusively online. I have found my niche is working with trauma, often working with individuals who are neurodiverse and LGBTQIA+ due to my own ADHD diagnosis and non-binary identity, however I have experience working with a wide range of clients.

You are not a problem to be fixed, my aim as your therapist is to try to provide the right conditions to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy to support your growth. This isn't a therapeutic approach wherein I will set a treatment plan or tell you what to do.

The person-centred approach to therapy means putting the client at the centre of therapy, as the expert of your own experience. There are 4 key components to person-centred therapy:

  • Unconditional positive regard - acceptance without conditions, regardless of what you bring to therapy
  • Congruence - being authentic and sharing my experience of your personal world
  • Empathy - actively working to understand your feelings
  • Non-directivity - allowing clients to take the lead and identify what is important for them, I will often start sessions with something similar to “what would you like to bring today?” or “how would you like to use our session today?” to allow clients to identify what matters most during a given session rather than deciding for the client what we discuss

How I work

In bullet points

  • Flexible - we can work with a structure for how we work together or see session-by-session what’s needed with regular check-ins
  • Authentic - I will not hide behind a professional facade; you will know me to allow us to develop a therapeutic bond
  • Supporting you to develop a sense of agency - my purpose is to help you to listen to yourself so you are developing coping mechanisms you can use to thrive outside of therapy

In detail

A lot of how I work centres around helping individuals to gain a sense of agency. You are the expert on yourself, so I am here to help you to hear yourself. Often we can feel what we’re saying makes no sense, but that’s only because it’s so hard when you are completely immersed in the depth of your own world. As your therapist I am there to walk alongside you and to help you see what can be easy to miss, picking up on common themes, and supporting you through your difficulties with empathy and unconditional positive regard. I don’t feel it’s fair to hide behind a professional facade so I will share my thoughts, opinions, and my experiences, allowing you to know me so we can develop a strong therapeutic relationship based on mutual trust and respect.

We will work together and regularly check in on whether the therapy is providing what you need, and how we can work together to meet your needs, whether that is long-term goals or session-by-session needs. Person-centred therapy doesn't have to be without structure, but equally, it can be completely without structure.

Allowing you to decide how sessions run and learning to trust your own intuition regarding what needs to be discussed is incredibly powerful and will help you long-term in listening to yourself and developing the coping mechanisms you need to thrive outside of therapy, as ultimately my role is to get you to the point wherein you no longer need therapy and to be your support until that is the case.

Training, qualifications & experience

Qualifications:

  • BSc (Hons) Psychology from the University of Nottingham
  • MA Person-Centred Experiential Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice from the University of Nottingham
  • Accredited Membership with the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society - MNCPS (Acc.) - Membership number NCS23-00234

I have been seeing clients since 2019 (6 years).

I have provided 154 hours of free therapy via The Human Flourishing Project, often working with clients with multiple diagnoses and previous negative experiences with health care professionals. I have also been seeing clients privately since 2023.

This means I have experience working with: childhood and adult sexual abuse, incest, anxiety and/or depression, Borderline Personality Disorder/Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder, autism, ADHD, chronic health conditions, workplace stress and career related concerns, familial issues, relationships (friendship, familial, romantic, sexual), perpetrators of abuse, and personal growth and development.

There is no way to capture all of my experience, as we are so much more than what we bring to therapy. My main focus is on cultivating a strong therapeutic bond so clients can bring whatever they want to bring to therapy and feel safe and confident in doing so.
