Hello, my name is Debbie and I have been in private practice in Buxton since 2008. I am BACP accredited and have a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology. Whether you are looking for help to relieve emotional distress or to focus on personal growth; I will support you in formulating therapeutic goals that have meaning for you and in working towards them. I will respect your views and decisions throughout the counselling process.
I have considerable experience of helping people with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationships and low self esteem, eating disorders, loss and trauma. I am trained in a range of counselling approaches including CBT, CBT-E and EMDR (trauma therapy).
Under normal circumstances I am able to respond promptly to requests for an initial consultation and, in consideration of your circumstances, aim to offer a choice of daytime and evening appointments. I have a comfortable and secure practice, free from the pressures of daily life. I am able to offer concessionary rates to those on low incomes/benefits who are available at off-peak times.
I have in-depth knowledge and considerable experience of applying psychological theory to helping clients with a wide range of problems and issues affecting their mental health and well-being. I am a qualified counselling supervisor and have experience of university lecturing in counselling and psychology.

My training was in Person-centred therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), both at Masters level and my practice integrates cognitive behavioural and solution-focused methods with a Humanistic approach. In my 15 years experience as a Counsellor I have worked in a variety of settings including the NHS, higher education, private practice and a community psychological service. I have worked with individuals of all ages, couples, families and groups.
I have successfully completed additional training in EMDR, completing parts 1,2 & 3 and have experience of delivering this form of therapy to individuals with PTSD and other issues relating to trauma and mental health difficulties.
Additional experience as a counsellor includes 5 years as a career counsellor and 10 years in eating disorders.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

I am experienced in counselling children and young people having worked in schools, colleges and universities as a counsellor with clients experiencing a wide range of issues. I have achieved an 'Excellent' pass in the Youth Certificate in Solution-focussed practice through 'Change - Birmingham'.
SPECIALIST EATING DISORDER COUNSELLING
I have specialist skills and knowledge in counselling for eating, weight and body image issues and disorders, having worked in this field for 10 years. My experience in the eating disorder field includes working with many clients with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-eating Disorder, Food Aversion, Purging Disorder, Body Image Issues, Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Night Eating Syndrome.
I am also experienced in counselling relatives, carers and friends of those with eating disorders and difficulties.
I have several years of experience as a careers counsellor and can help you to explore work and career related issues such as work-related stress, work place conflict and career change/development.
My fees are as follows:
Initial consultation by telephone, free of charge (around 30 minutes)
Children and young people under 16 - £40 per session
Adults - £45 per session
Couples - £55 per session

Adults - £45 per session
I have daytime and evening availability. Weekly sessions, when booked in blocks of 4, attract a £5 per session discount, however, you can opt for fortnightly sessions to suit your availability and budget.
