About me

I’m Dr David Cunningham, a Chartered Counselling Psychologist. My focus is on creating a safe, understanding space where we can explore what’s happening for you and find ways forward that feel right. I offer support for people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, OCD, addiction, and chronic pain. I also provide neurodiversity-affirming assessments and support for ADHD and related attention or executive functioning differences, as well as gender identity and recognition support. You can meet with me online, wherever you are in Scotland or beyond, or in person in Inverness and Fife.

My approach focuses on building a trusting therapeutic relationship. I’m committed to creating a respectful, affirming space.  With both professional expertise and a personal understanding of the challenges faced by transgender young adults and their families, I offer affirmative therapy, as well as gender dysphoria assessments and diagnoses, aligned with the latest standards of care set by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).

I also offer neurodevelopmental assessment and diagnosis with a strength-based, acceptance-focused approach. I can provide post-diagnostic psychological therapy, helping individuals understand their neurodiversity, build confidence, and develop strategies for thriving in daily life.

I aim to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where my clients feel heard, understood, and supported. I am dedicated to improving lives through the transformative potential of compassionate relationships and promoting a more inclusive and equitable society.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a doctorate in counselling psychology and degrees in biology and psychology. As a Counselling Psychologist, I am registered with the HCPC and BPS. I have gained many years of life experience as a professional musician and creative professional. I am passionate about using my creativity and empathy to connect with my clients.

I have supported clients through a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, complex trauma, bereavement, cancer, addiction, suicidal ideation, and gender identity issues. My approach integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), and Polyvagal Theory.
