About me
Hello! My name is Claire and I am a friendly, experienced, welcoming Counsellor based in Mirfield, available to clients over 16, wherever you may be via face to face or on-line. I counsel individuals and couples+. I am understanding of and welcoming to those in the neuro-divergent community and the LGBTQ+ community. I am also a nurse with 28 years working in the NHS so I have experience of a wide range of medical conditions, short and long-term.
I offer a peaceful space for you and about you, where you are the expert in yourself and where we work together to help you make the changes you decide on. You can come and talk about whatever you want to without fear of judgement or rejection and it's ok to feel anxious, scared, or anything else. I am here to listen to you and help you find solutions that work for you.
Counselling is hard and it is a brave thing to make that first contact, I know because I have been through it myself as a client. We can have an initial, brief conversation by phone (individual or couple+) to see if I'm the right counsellor for you. There is no obligation or expectation at that point.
If you decide you want to go ahead I can offer short or long-term counselling, a single session or a fixed number of sessions.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Diploma in Counselling using a 'Person-centred approach'. This can be a really useful approach for clients as you take the lead and I see you as the expert in yourself. We work together in a very open, non-directive way with you identifying your own goals. I don't tell you what to do or give advice but I help shed light on what you might 'know' and are experiencing but might be struggling to make sense of. I work with clients age 16 and over only. I am not trained/qualified to work with children.
I am also trained in working with relationships/ couples with the aim being to improve communication, resolve conflict and find a way forward, whether that be together or apart.
I am experienced in counselling clients who bring a variety of issues including; divorce, bereavement, anxiety, depression, domestic abuse, traumatic experiences, sexuality, long term and end of life health conditions and career issues. I have also regularly worked with clients who are neuro-divergent.
I enjoy working with young people (16+) and have helped them work through the challenges of transitioning between child an adulthood. I have also helped several students with exam / study nerves and worries.
I am also a qualified nurse and have worked in the NHS for 28 years. I have worked with patients and professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds and differences, and I have many years' experience of working with people living with complex medical conditions and clients have really appreciated this additional in-depth understanding.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information
I am an individual member of the BACP, I am fully insured and have an enhanced DBS check.
I am qualified to see anyone 16 and older. I can now also offer relationship / couples counselling.
I still work as a nurse so I am not able to see clients anytime during the day on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
As a mum myself, I protect my time so don't work or respond to messages after 7 or at weekends.
