About me

Please know that you are not alone.  I understand the courage, and vulnerability (a strength), that it takes to acknowledge where you’re at and to explore professional support.  I value therapy as a collaborative and healing space – to be heard and understood, to discover and learn, to expand and grow, and to ‘just be.’

Hello, I’m Dr Calum Rankin (Clinical Psychologist) and welcome to Waves Within Psychology (WW-P).  I provide evidence-based psychological treatment to help people (adults and adolescents 12+) work through distressing experiences, often resulting from traumas or life stressors, which you may experience as:

Anxiety or depression with little space to experience calm and Wellness.

Distressing memories or thoughts with little space for ownership and Agency over your mind and body.

Conforming / always prioritising others / just ‘going through the motions’ with little space to realise and live in line with your Values.

Withdrawn from self / emotions / life with little space for Engagement.

Self-blame / shame / putting self down with little space for building Self-compassion.

WW-P has been shaped through trauma informed care within the NHS, Private Practice and Holistic Settings in Southeast Asia, as well as from my own personal healing and self-growth.  Working alongside you, my intention is to integrate effective therapeutic approaches to support Wellness, Agency, Values, Engagement and Self-compassion; Waves within that help support psychological well-being.  Working through experiences within, everything else follows, for a more fully realised and authentic way of being and living.

I am currently offering in person or online therapy with adults and adolescents (12+). If you would like to book an appointment please email me to enquire about availability. I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation to further explore what support you are looking for.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have over 10 years experience working in mental health services, where I completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2018. I have gained experience working in NHS mental health services for adults and young people and in private practice. This has included one to one and group therapy and supervising/training other staff. For example, training to support the mental health needs and identity exploration of LGBTQ+ clients.

My experience has been particularly influenced by trauma-informed care and working in holistic settings in Southeast Asia, which focused on addiction recovery, mind-body connection and self-compassion.

Evidence-based therapies I use include Compassion Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (including Trauma Focused) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I am also currently training in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). I believe it is important to work collaboratively and to integrate therapy to fit your needs.

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
