About me

I am counsellor who helps adults navigate the emotional challenges & difficulties around infertility, pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.  I work with people who are anxious, frightened and uncertain on their journey in becoming a parent.

Hi there, I’m Caitlin. A South African ex-pat living in Edinburgh.  I work with individuals who are struggling with the  challenges around infertility, pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.  Any person who is struggling to navigate the journey to become a parent, whether it is a straight forward or has numerous challenges along the way, you might feel you need some additional support in helping you to achieve your noble goal of becoming a mum or a dad.

In our work together, we'll use practical, evidence-based tools to quiet racing thoughts, rebuild your confidence, strengthen relationships, and rediscover joy and connection. You don't have to face this alone; I'm here to walk alongside you toward lasting relief and a more balanced, fulfilling life.

My mission statement for my practice, Greener Avenues Therapy, is to provide compassionate, evidence-based counselling services that promote mental well-being and empower clients to navigate life’s challenges, especially the challenges of being a  parent. I invite you to contact me for a free 30-minute initial consultation whereby we discuss whether I am able to support you effectively in addressing your mental health challenges and helping you to thrive, down Greener Avenues…

Training, qualifications & experience

I am an accredited counsellor with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based support in a safe, non-judgmental space. I draw on a strong foundation in psychology and specialised therapeutic approaches to help clients navigate life's challenges, build resilience, and work towards positive change.

My core training includes a SCOTACS Diploma in Counselling (A CBT Approach), which equips me to use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques effectively to address issues such as anxiety, depression, unhelpful thought patterns, and behavioural changes. This is complemented by my Honours Degree in Psychology from the University of South Africa (UNISA), giving me a deep understanding of human behaviour, emotions, and mental processes.

I hold a postgraduate award in Education Studies (Counselling) from the University of Cambridge, which has strengthened my ability to facilitate learning, self-reflection, and personal development within the therapeutic relationship.

With specialist interest and training in perinatal mental health through a short course with the Tavistock Foundation, I offer informed support to individuals and couples experiencing challenges related to pregnancy, birth, miscarriage, fertility difficulties, postnatal mental health, and early parenthood.

I have completed both the Foundation and Advanced courses through the British Infertility Counselling Association (BICA), enhancing my expertise in fertility-related counselling, including the emotional complexities of infertility treatments, donor conception, loss, and decision-making in reproductive health. I am actively working towards full BICA accreditation to further demonstrate my specialist competence in this area.

My professional experience spans both NHS and private settings, where I have supported a wide range of clients with issues including stress, relationship difficulties, low mood, trauma, life transitions, and mental health concerns during fertility and perinatal journeys. This diverse background allows me to adapt my approach to individual needs, integrating CBT principles with empathetic, person-centred exploration.

My lived experience of struggling with my mental health after the births’ of my children was the catalyst for me to explore ways, I could integrate my skills as a therapist and my own experience of postnatal struggles and to effectively help those who have had similar battles with their mental health during pregnancy or during the postnatal period.  I also volunteer for PANDAS, the leading perinatal mental health charity in the UK, supporting parents and partners through their perinatal mental health struggles.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or seeking clarity and support, I would welcome the opportunity to work with you collaboratively towards greater wellbeing and understanding.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

As an ex-pat South African, having moved country and city I know the difficulties involved in finding your feet and settling down in the UK. I can support individuals who are struggling to settle down after the challenges of moving to a different country or city and not having an immediate support around them.  This includes university students who have moved to a different city for their studies and finding life as a student a little overwhelming ( I offer concessionary rates for students)
