About me

I am a psychotherapist with over 30 years experience as a mental health professional in acute care, rehabilitation, primary care and forensic setting. I also have a post graduate diploma in cognitive behavioral counselling and groupwork.

Within these settibgs I have gained experience of working with a number of presentations but primarly focused on trauma.

This allows me to use a number of modalities including person centred, schema therapy as well as brainspotting therapy.

I am also insured and have undertaken Disclosure Scotland application.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified as a general nurse in 1981 transferring to mental health nursing in 1990.

In 2014 I qualified as a cognitive behavioral therapist and have been working as same since then.

Alongside this I continued in my nursing practice until I retired in 2022.

In relation to my counselling I have undertaken continuing professional development in grief, childhood sexual abuse, schema therapy and brainspotting therapy (levels 1 - 3).

My experience has been gained via the training, counselling placements, working as voluntary counsellor post qualifying and via my own counselling business.

Within my mental health work I was trained in child protection, confidentiality and data protection.

I also update my practice by reading different theories and authors. I then reflect on what I have read and how it interacts with my practice.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

It can be daunting looking for a counsellor especially at a time you are not feeling your best.

I hear you. I listen. It is important to find someone you can relate to so that together we can move forward. How we do this will be discussed planned and reviewed together.

I do this by asking you to complete a measuring tool, sounds scary but it isn't. This is another way of establishing if the model of therapy used is working.
