About me

Welcome. My name is Arlette Anfield and my experience of depression and anxiety helps me to appreciate that the daily challenges of life can be difficult and distressing. This can lead to a sense of isolation and loneliness, that it's difficult for others to really understand.

In these circumstances, it may be helpful to develop an awareness of the root causes. In Psychotherapy we have an opportunity to work together to identify any underlying issues or problems that may be contributing to your situation. From here we can consider alternative possibilities that may create more productive and fulfilling outcomes. Often this is an inside out experience, rather than an outside in one. In other words, what makes you tick and how that influences all of your relationships including the one you have with yourself. For example, how do you really feel about yourself and the way others may perceive you?

I am aware that taking that first step is both incredibly brave and daunting but counselling encourages you to think about yourself more deeply and to develop a greater sense of self awareness. It offers an opportunity to take charge of your life, enabling you to live it more fully. I truly believe that everyone has the capacity to grow, develop and make changes that create a sense of peace and contentment.

Sometimes our relationships and ways of solving problems are influenced by past events and how we made sense of them at the time. This may lead to a reliance on coping strategies that emerged during our formative years. However, in adulthood these may be producing outcomes that are problematic and, unhelpful .

Working collaboratively together we begin a process that identifies repeated unproductive patterns, developing a greater understanding about the triggers that maintain them. This empowers you to examine your strengths and limitations and to create alternative possibilities and choices. To work out new ways of thinking and acting that can help you to lead a more fulfilling life that finally gets you off the treadmill.

You can bring whatever is on your mind to the session – anxieties, fears, feelings, thoughts, hopes, memories, dreams, fantasies and sensations.

With this in mind, I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space for you to examine the issues that may be concerning you and which may be having an adverse impact on the quality of your life. I work on the assumption that feeling fully supported within therapy and working at a pace that feels comfortable for you forms the basis of our working relationship together.

I am an Integrative Counsellor/Psychotherapist qualified to degree level. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy and therefore work within their ethical framework. You can locate me on their registered list under my unique number 145697.

My counselling practice is based on an Integrative Model that includes humanistic, CBT and psychodynamic approaches.  Consequently I am able to offer a bespoke service, tailored to consider your individual needs or circumstances. These services are available to adolescents and adults, on both short and long term bases.

I have a private practice within walking distance of Brentwood town centre.  I also work within a range of settings that includes Charitable and Educational organisations where I deal with an extensive range of issues. These include, for example, bereavement and loss, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, issues concerning personal identity and trauma, self harm, exam anxiety and OCD.

You do not need to be referred to the service by your GP.

* The first session is an assessment of 50 minutes to get a good initial sense of your present situation and learn a little about your past, as well as about your hopes for the future. It is an opportunity to say what is troubling you, what has brought you to therapy now and what you would like to achieve in coming. It's also an ideal opportunity to consider whether you feel comfortable with me, as this is also an important element of developing a productive therapeutic relationship.

I will be directed by what you feel would be helpful to focus on and make some suggestions about how we might approach it.

I will be happy to answer any questions you have about the process or about the way I work and you can get a sense of what it feels like to talk to me. If you would like to continue to work together, we will normally meet for 50 minutes at the same time each week.

If you would like to make an appointment with me, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The fee for assessment/introduction is £50.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

Whilst my counselling practice encompasses a wide range of issues, I truly have a heartfelt interest in bereavement based upon personal experience.  It can be a confusing, isolating and lonely time and can cause a real shift in identity.

As a result, I respond to my clients stories in whatever way is best for them and their specific needs. Maybe what they need is to be listened to and acknowledged? Perhaps they are searching for goals, answers or resolution or wanting someone to support them through the pain of their grief.  I have extensive professional experience working within various bereavement organisations. This includes counselling for end of life issues and for parents who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth or loss of a young child. My experience also extends to those who may have experienced loss as a result of suicide or murder.

I operate a cancellation policy, if you need to cancel within 48hrs there will be no charge, if however you cancel within 24hrs the full fee will be charged.
