About me
Hello. I'm Ali, I'm a person-centred counsellor with 20+ years experience in helping people explore, heal and move forward into more fulfilling and authentic lives. I offer a free introductory session as I believe it is important that you find a counsellor in whom you have confidence and with whom you feel comfortable. This gives us the chance to meet each other and help you decide if I am the right counsellor for you.
Trained in the person centred approach, I have a deeply held belief that we each have within us more wisdom to support ourselves through stuck or difficult places than we tend to imagine. I love having the opportunity to meet with each unique individual and the chance to work together to unlock the hidden potential which can be the guide to a more fulfilled and authentic life.
There are times when circumstances cause us distress and when we struggle to come to terms with life events. And there are times when we experience feelings of sadness or anxiety without any obvious reason. Sometimes we feel stuck or behave in ways or encounter feelings we don't understand. Sometimes we feel numb or detached and are concerned we just don't feel anything at all. I believe speaking to a counsellor can be a positive step in regaining perspective and clarifying your situation. It offers a way of looking at your feelings in order to find your way forward and move towards a greater sense of well-being.
Training, qualifications & experience
I obtained my Postgraduate Diploma in person-centred counselling from the University of Strathclyde in 2001. Previously I obtained my MSW from the University of Edinburgh in 1992 and and a BSC in 1990. Alongside my academic path I have had a life-long commitment to my own growth and development and am interested in all learning that opens me up to be the most alive, open and accepting person I can be. I have built up a breadth and depth of experience over the years in working both on my own journey and with others. I am interested and experienced in working with a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, abuse, bereavement, loss, trauma, sexual identity and relationship difficulties. Over the last 20 years I have worked at a University counselling service, with a number of Employee Assistance Programmes and in my own private practice.
I am a Registered Accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and committed to working within their ethical guidelines for good practice.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
