About me

You may know that something in your relationship is not working, without being completely sure what has changed.

Perhaps you keep having the same argument. One of you wants more closeness. The other pulls away. You may still love each other, but feel less connected than you once did. Sex may have changed. Trust may have been damaged. Resentment may have built up. You may be wondering whether this is a difficult period, or whether something between you has really changed.

Sometimes it is harder to name. You can feel lonely beside someone you love. You can wonder whether you are asking for too much. You may find yourself reacting in ways you do not fully understand. There may be things between you that are rarely spoken about.

I’m Adam Lawrence-Rodriguez, a BACP registered therapist offering couples and individual therapy in Enfield, North London and online across the UK.

With couples, I am interested in what happens between you. Not only what you argue about, but what happens underneath it. What happens when one of you reaches out. What makes the other retreat. What each of you might be asking for without quite saying it.

Therapy gives us space to look at these patterns more closely. We can begin to understand what keeps happening between you, what feels difficult to say, and what each of you may be hoping to receive from the other.

I also work individually with people who want to understand themselves and their relationships more deeply. You may notice the same feelings appearing in different relationships. You may be hard on yourself, feel stuck, or be curious about why certain people and situations affect you so strongly.

The different parts of who we are can shape how we see ourselves and how we relate to other people. Your background, identity and experiences may be important to what brings you to therapy, or they may simply be part of the wider picture. I am interested in what they mean for you.

My approach is warm, thoughtful and curious. I am not there to tell you what your relationship should look like. I want to understand what it is like to be the two of you, or to be you, and what might become clearer when there is space to talk about the things that are usually left unsaid.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained at Tavistock Relationships, where I completed postgraduate training in psychodynamic couple and individual therapy. My training has given me specialist experience in working with couples, alongside my work with individuals.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and hold a BSc and PGDip.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in mental health and race equity, including as a Senior Race Equity Manager at Mind. That experience continues to inform how I think about identity, difference, belonging and the wider social experiences that can shape our relationships.

My clinical work includes supporting couples and individuals with relationship difficulties, intimacy, communication, trust, infidelity, anxiety, low mood, self-criticism, identity and patterns that can feel difficult to change.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I offer weekly 50 minute sessions for couples and individuals.

Sessions are available in person in Enfield, North London, and online across the UK. I also offer an initial consultation so we can talk about what brings you to therapy, what you are looking for, and whether working together feels right.

Couples usually attend sessions together. I work with relationships in many different forms and do not assume there is one right way for a relationship to look.
