Where do you begin healing after trauma or loss?
If you’ve lived through trauma, grief, or deep loss, you know it’s not something you just “get over.” It lingers. It shapes the way you breathe, the way your body holds tension, the way your mind races when you’re trying to fall asleep.
Some days, you can be laughing with friends and still feel a quiet ache in the background. Other days, it’s overwhelming.
Here’s the truth: you’re not broken. You don’t need fixing. What you need are anchors. Anchors that help you feel steady when life feels like it’s knocking you off your feet.
That’s where the Anchored Healing Matrix comes in.
Why healing after trauma feels so hard
Trauma and loss have a way of cutting us off from ourselves:
- Your body feels tense or on edge.
- Your mind replays old stories you can’t quiet.
- You feel self-critical, doubting your worth.
- Trusting people feels like a risk you’re not sure you can take.
“The body keeps the score: if the memory of trauma is encoded in the viscera, in heart rate, blood pressure, and gut-wrenching sensations, this needs to be addressed.”
– Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score
Healing isn’t about ignoring what happened. It’s about gently noticing what’s happening in your body, mind, and self, and slowly finding balance again.
Introducing the Anchored Healing Matrix
The Anchored Healing Matrix is a guide to exploring safety, meaning, and connection in your healing journey.
Notice where you feel unsteady, disconnected, or stuck, and where you long for calm and clarity. There are no right or wrong answers, only your truth.
How to use: Read each question below slowly. Notice what it stirs in you. Write your thoughts or reflect quietly.
The 3 anchors
The Anchored Healing Matrix is built on three anchors every human needs: Safety, Meaning, and Connection.
And it explores them through three parts of you: Body, Mind, and Self.
1. Safety
- Body: Where is your body tense? What would ease feel like?
- Mind: Which thoughts overwhelm you? What would calm sound like?
- Self: When are you most self-critical? What would kindness look like?
Safety is the ground beneath your feet. Without it, everything else feels shaky.
Try this: Place a hand on your chest. Breathe in slowly. Breathe out slower. One breath at a time, your body starts to hear: I am safe right now.
2. Meaning
- Body: Which habits energise or drain you? How do you want to move through life?
- Mind: What gives you purpose now? What meaning is missing?
- Self: Which values matter most? How closely are you living to them? “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn
Meaning doesn’t have to be a grand mission. It can be a small ritual: your morning cup of tea, a five-minute walk, calling someone who makes you laugh.
3. Connection
- Body: When do you feel most present in your body? What brings that alive?
- Mind: What makes trust hard? What could rebuild it?
- Self: Who or what feels unsafe to connect with? What would safety feel like? “Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” – Brené Brown, Daring Greatly
Connection heals what trauma isolates. Even one safe person, a friend, a counsellor, a loved one, can shift everything.
Why these anchors matter
- Without safety, your nervous system stays in survival mode.
- Without meaning, life feels empty.
- Without connection, even joy feels lonely.
The Anchored Healing Matrix doesn’t erase pain. But it offers a compass when you feel lost.
Small shifts that change everything
Healing isn’t about huge leaps. It’s about tiny, repeated steps.
- Body check-in: Notice where you’re tense. Drop your shoulders. Breathe once, slowly.
- Energy audit: Write down one habit that drains you, and one that restores you.
- Connection ritual: Reach out to someone safe and have a five-minute honest chat.
“You are the sky. Everything else, it’s just the weather.” – Pema Chödrön
When you feel stuck
Some days, healing feels like you’re going backwards. That’s normal. Healing isn’t linear.
“Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.”Brené Brown
When you feel stuck, return to the Matrix:
- Where do I feel unsafe?
- Where have I lost meaning?
- Where am I disconnected?
Then choose just one anchor to focus on.
Here’s your invitation to pause, breathe and reflect.
Notice where you long for calm and connection. There are no right or wrong answers, only your truth.
If you’re ready to move from feeling unsteady to anchored, the Anchored Healing Matrix is your first step.
