Supervision details

What Is Clinical Supervision?

Did you know there is no no one set definition for supervision? Nor is there no clear research to support whether supervision 'works' according to any outcome criteria. So, as therapists, counsellors, and practitioners, how do we choose the right supervisor for ourselves?

Do we seek someone who shares our modality, aligns with our thinking, and provides clear guidance? Or do we look for someone who challenges us, helps us identify blind spots - both in our work and within ourselves - and supports us in maintaining professional boundaries? Perhaps the ideal supervisor lies somewhere in between.

What we do know is that trust and respect are fundamental to the supervisory relationship. The supervisee must value the supervisor’s experience, while the supervisor must have a deep awareness of the supervisee’s stage of professional development. Supervision should provide a safe space for open discussion - where the supervisee can explore client relationships, reflect on progress, and address challenges without fear of judgment.

With 20 years of experience working within a highly respected, award-winning charitable organisation in Southampton, I have supported and mentored numerous counsellors and practitioners in their professional growth. I am experienced in both group and individual supervision and take a comprehensive approach - integrating formative (developmental), normative (professional standards), and restorative (supportive) elements.

Additionally, my extensive background as a Designated Safeguarding Lead has given me a strong foundation in safeguarding practices. My supervision style is collaborative, insightful, and tailored to meet both the supervisees and their clients’ needs, ensuring ethical, reflective, and effective practice.

I am able to work on a one to one basis or in a group and have many years experience in delivering both formats. I offer a calm and unique setting, allowing for exploration of the clinical challenges presented by clients. I believe in the richness of relational work and invite and actively encourage my supervisees to explore the conscious and unconscious dynamics of working therapeutically with another person.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
