About me

I am a Person Centred Counsellor, a Humanistic method, that places you at the heart of the therapeutic process. It’s based on the belief that you already have the inner resources to explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace, but background stress and day to day life just get in the way. By getting rid of the things that are preventing your growth we can help you towards personal healing and long term fullfillment

This approach helps to improve your emotional resilience, deal with grief and loss and move towards closure and self-acceptance. It can be especially helpful in healing from past experiences, separating yourself from shame, and creating lasting personal growth.

My favourite part of being a counsellor is meeting new clients, so please don't be worried about your first counselling session. It is typically a positive experience and is always the start of a  journey of self discovery and growth; one that I would be honoured to help you walk.

Relevant Academic Research

My previous academic research has focussed on Song-writing Therapy, where lyrics are used to explore one's perspective as well as to document these explorations for a later date. Through this work, I have gained a deep respect for the power of symbolism and how unrestrained creativity can be used to reveal and explore one’s inner workings. This approach is something that I have used to refine my modality of counselling, helping me focus on important words and phrases and the hidden meanings  behind them.

Professional Experience

Other than my ongoing private practice, I have spent just over a year counselling at the GP NHS service in Fulford, York. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to meet people from every walk of life in York. In particular, I worked with those awaiting medical procedures, students, young professionals and those considering retirement.

Having undertaken academic courses at a number of higher learning institutions, the University of York, York St John and York College, I have personal experience regarding the challenges these endeavours can bring.

Location

I offer confidential face to face sessions in the centre of York which are easily accessible via public transport, or with parking nearby. If you are interested in organising a meeting then please get in touch and we can discuss details over a phone call.

I hope you have a good day,

Tom

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
