About me

I am a Person Centred Counsellor, a Humanistic method, that places the client at the heart of the therapeutic process. You already have the inner resources to explore your thoughts and feelings, but background stress and day to day life can get in the way. I am here to help remove the stress at the door and provide you with a space to speak your mind. During our conversations we may decide on Therapeutic Goals that will guide our work, typically leading to discovery and growth.

This approach can improve emotional resilience, self acceptance and social processing skills. It can be especially helpful in healing from past experiences that impact your day to day life, separating yourself from shame and creating long-term personal growth.

Relevant Academic Research

My previous academic research has focussed on Song-writing Therapy, where lyrics are used to explore one's perspective as well as to document these explorations for a later date. Through this work, I have gained a deep respect for the power of symbolism and how unrestrained creativity can be used to reveal and explore one’s inner workings. This approach is something that I have used to refine my modality of counselling, helping me focus on important words and phrases and the unknown meanings behind them.

If you would like to see my research into this area please get in touch and I would be more than happy to send it over, I would also be very happy to discuss it in great detail!

Professional Experience

I have worked in Private practice for 4 years. During this time I have spent just over a year counselling at the GP NHS service in Fulford, York. This experience  allowed me to meet people from every walk of life. In particular, I worked with those awaiting medical procedures, students and young professionals.

During my practice I have gained particular experience in areas relating to substance abuse; Pornography, Self-Harm, Alcohol and Drugs.

Having undertaken academic courses at a number of higher learning institutions, the University of York, York St John and York College, I also have personal experience in and around Academia.

Location

I offer confidential face to face sessions in both Leeds and York, as well as online through Zoom. If you are interested in organising a meeting then please get in touch or we can discuss details over a phone call.

I hope you have a great day,

Tom

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
