About me

Hello and thank you for visiting my page.

My approach to counselling is to work holistically, with the whole person. This will allow us to consider every aspect of life - how we live, think, and interact, and the impact this has on our minds and bodies. My previous role as a mental health practitioner in the NHS (working primarily with chronic health issues as well as neurodivergent clients) also informs this approach.

How might counselling help you?

I chose the name ‘Lighthouse’ for my counselling practice, as I believe that when life feels a bit ‘stormy’ and uncertain, it can be helpful to explore difficult topics with safety and gentle guidance. Working with a counsellor can help shine a light on needs that have been neglected, and offer a different perspective on things that have perhaps felt confusing or overwhelming.

My hope is that our counselling sessions will offer you a compassionate space and give you the freedom to find your voice, explore your understanding of yourself and others, and to make new healthy decisions.

As a Person-Centred Counsellor, I will listen with empathic understanding and provide the space to explore at your own pace, offering you acceptance without judgment. I also draw on other counselling approaches such as CBT and grounding techniques and integrate these into the work, where needed.

I offer a free 20-minute telephone conversation to give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to gain a sense of what it might be like to work with me in counselling. If you think you would find this introductory phone call helpful, please text or email me, and we can set up a mutually agreeable time for this.

What to expect in your first session

If you decide to proceed, your first session will be an opportunity to look at what your hopes and expectations are for the counselling sessions, and this provides us with an outline of your aims. While giving you something to work towards, it keeps our focus on the issues that are most important to you. However, counselling is often a very fluid experience, and we can be adaptable if other issues surface or your circumstances change.

I work under the Ethical Framework of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), of which I am a registered member. I receive monthly supervision in accordance with the BACP Code of Ethics to provide the best possible service to you. My supervisor abides by the same standards for confidentiality and data protection. I use my supervision time to explore how I’m working as a counsellor and to consider possible therapeutic interventions.

Please note - I am taking new clients from 8th September, and I work Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9.30am until 12.30pm.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Areas of counselling I deal with

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have worked with a broad range of presenting issues, in private practice and in the NHS, and my approach is tailored to individual client needs.

I have several years of experience working with clients with Autism and ADHD.

I have also worked with clients (and previous NHS patients) with chronic health issues, such as chronic pain, fatigue, ME/CFS. During my time in the NHS, along with a colleague, I set up a group programme and a Pain Cafe to support patients living with chronic health issues. This experience and training has enabled me to support clients towards new ways of viewing and relating to their health journey and benefiting from meaningful progress in this.

Having previously worked as a Community Champion, I can also integrate coaching skills into my private practice, where this is appropriate.

Additional information

If you need to postpone/cancel your session, please give me 48 hours’ notice, as this allows me the time to offer that space to another client. I understand that emergencies may crop up, and this amount of notice may not always be possible. Sessions cancelled/postponed with 48 hours or more notice will be refunded or payment carried over to the next session. Sessions which are cancelled/postponed with less than 48 hours’ notice will not be refunded. If sessions are being paid for by another organisation, the cancellation policy still applies. Sessions are £50 for sixty minutes and paid a week in advance (i.e., at the previous session).

Sessions will last for 60 minutes (maximum), and I will bring your session to a safe close. This time boundary is essential as it allows for space between clients to maintain privacy/confidentiality for you. Sessions are usually weekly, to ensure a sense of consistency and continuity for you. If you decide to continue in longer-term counselling with me, you may wish to move to fortnightly/monthly sessions, if you prefer. Some clients choose this as a longer-term option, so that they can afford to maintain their sessions more easily. Due to childcare, I am not always able to work during school holidays, but I will discuss this with you in advance.

Further information

I work from home in a private office with a separate entrance. The counselling space is calm and quiet, and I have a small, friendly dog who will say ‘hello’ and then usually falls asleep by my feet. I do not have wheelchair access, and there are about 16 steps up to the house. My office space does not currently have access to toilet facilities, but there are public toilets very nearby at the White River Place car park. I have a parking space for one car on the driveway.
