About me

Hello. My name is Susan Light and I am a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, Consultant and Trainer. For the last thirty years, I have gained experience in working with individuals, couples and families. I work with people of all ages from various backgrounds and cultures.

I qualified as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist in 1993, via Manchester University. Since then I have undertaken an extensive range of post graduate study.

TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY

For most of my working career I have worked in multidisciplinary teams in the statutory, educational and voluntary sector. I have worked as a mediator focusing on conflict resolution and I run training for organisations on communication skills, stress management, assertiveness and conflict resolution.

I have experience of working in partnership with the police, prison service, universities, social services and youth services as well as children’s charities as a Consultant.

PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING

For fourteen years I have worked in Adult Mental Health Services in a primary care setting for the NHS. I have experience of working with people with mild, moderate and severe mental health issues.

As well as working in the NHS I am also in private practice, working in South Manchester, Bolton and Wigan. Clients are referred to me in many ways; self referrals, GPs Occupational Health Departments, Personal Injury Lawyers, Statutory Services, Voluntary Sector, other professional therapists and supervisors. I welcome enquiries so please feel free to contact me (email/call) and I will be in touch.

How can I help?

In the twenty four years I have worked as a counsellor, psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, I have encountered such a rich variety of clients, making my work both very interesting and extremely rewarding. For example, I have worked with people who have experienced trauma i.e. been involved in a serious accident, been bereaved, witnessed a traumatic event or been abused; those going through a relationship breakdown or suffering from workplace stress; people with drug, alcohol or other addictions; people who are seriously ill, or are caring for a loved one who is ill.

But I don’t just work with people with problems. Lots of people work with counsellors because there is something they want to achieve, and something within them stopping them from doing it. From simply wanting the confidence to go holiday alone, wanting to win the World Championships or build a business empire, I help people achieve their dreams.

My Approach

In my work I use a wide variety of different counselling and psychotherapy and hypnotherapy techniques, but I prefer not to baffle my clients with jargon. At the end of the day, I find that clients aren’t really bothered whether I use therapy A or technique B, they just want to know that I can help them. And I can.

I really enjoy my work; helping people to deal with their problems and face life with a positive outlook is very rewarding indeed. And I can help you. You might think your problem is trivial, or you might think it so great that no-one can help, but this is not the case. Just give me a call for an informal chat and a no-obligation discussion about how I can help.

I offer my skills, knowledge, honesty and integrity. Each person is unique and I tailor my skills and knowledge to suit their needs.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
