About me

We all can experience times of feeling that we are struggling with what life throws at us. You might be finding life to be overwhelming or feel that you have lost your way. Relationships may repeatedly lead to hurt or feelings of failure. Events from the past may be upsetting you or impairing your confidence. You could be feeling anxious, depressed, or grieving a loss. People go to counselling for many reasons. Whatever the issue that has made you consider counselling, finding the right counsellor for you can lead to the change you want or need. I can work with any issue that a person may bring. I have a special interest in trauma, which is a broad area that comprises many forms of suffering and abuse such as bullying, domestic violence and controlling behaviour, as well as conditions that may be associated such as anxiety, depression, intense self-criticism, borderline personality disorder, and eating disorders. I have a PhD in Psychology for which I researched brain functioning and I have also studied neurology, so I have an understanding of neurodiversity, how brain functioning may underpin challenging behaviours, and also the effects of neurological conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury.

I have a calm and friendly manner, providing support without judgement to create a safe space for you to discuss your worries and concerns. Counselling presents an opportunity to work together to become aware of underlying issues and to overcome any challenges that may appear, aiding you to find your way forward. My therapeutic approach is integrative, where the counselling process is flexible and tailored to meet your specific needs. I currently offer counselling online and by telephone to anyone within the UK. I am based in Bath. Having a good relationship with your counsellor is the basis of all counselling. I give a free introductory 30-minute session to discuss the details of therapy and for you to consider if I am the right counsellor for you. I am a registered member of the BACP, am fully insured, and receive regular supervision. I am subscribed to the DBS subscription service.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a level 4 Diploma in Counselling and am a registered member of the BACP. I have counselled staff within the NHS, counselled students at a university, and I currently provide counselling for a charity supporting single parents. This counselling work has involved many different issues. For my PhD I studied and researched in Psychology for many years. This has aided my understanding of different clinical conditions and mental health, as well as child development and attachment, forensic psychology, behavioural learning, health psychology, social behaviour, neuroscience, and neurology.

I have been a listener for a national suicide helpline, listening compassionately to support callers experiencing a wide array of distressing situations.

I have worked with a charity aiding people with brain injuries, such as stroke or physical trauma. Negative effects upon language production, memory retention, and behaviour disinhibition were most common, and my work was aided by my knowledge of the workings of the brain.

I volunteered on the wards of my local hospital: For this role, I served food and drink to patients with close regard to their physical condition (for example, nil by mouth, diabetes, fluids only) while providing conversation and emotional support.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
