About me
Hello, I’m Shu, a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist offering in-person therapy in Balham and Battersea, South West London, as well as online therapy across the UK.
I work with people who have spent much of their lives showing up for others: thoughtful, capable, and deeply committed to those around them. You know how to carry responsibility, and now you’re choosing to turn that same care and attention toward yourself.
Many of my clients come to therapy not only because they’re navigating challenges, but because they’re ready: ready to grow, to reconnect with who they are, and to live in a way that feels more aligned and authentic.
In our work together, I offer a calm, confidential, and culturally sensitive space where you can feel genuinely heard, understood, and emotionally safe.
You might be:
- Re-evaluating what you want from relationships, work, or life moving forward
- Wanting to live more authentically, even if the next step feels unclear
- Becoming aware of old patterns, such as people-pleasing, overthinking, or self-doubt, and feeling curious to understand them and create change
- Seeking healthier boundaries to honour your time, energy, and priorities
- Recognising burnout, whether from work, caregiving, parenting, or major life transitions, and feeling ready to restore balance
If you’re looking for clarity, confidence, or a stronger sense of self, therapy offers a supportive space where you don’t have to figure everything out alone.
How I work
Therapy with me is collaborative, relational and grounding. It offers a chance to slow down, make sense of what’s happening for you, and feel genuinely heard.
Together, we explore the experiences and expectations that have shaped you - including early relationships, cultural or family influences, and identity - and how these may be affecting you now. I hold these complexities with care, creating space for insight, choice, and change.
Our work supports you in reconnecting with your values, honouring your needs, and stepping into a more authentic and emotionally balanced way of living.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a registered BACP counsellor and psychotherapist, with a CPCAB Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. My work is rooted in person-centred and psychodynamic approaches, this allows therapy to be shaped around you - your pace, your experiences, and what feels most important to explore within a collaborative and respectful relationship.
In my private practice, I support adults with a range of concerns, including anxiety, burnout, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, grief, bereavement and loss, and major life transitions. Alongside this, I also work as a counsellor at Balham Community Counselling Service, where I offer support around these same concerns within a community setting. Across both roles, I work with people from diverse backgrounds and life stages, including those exploring cultural, racial, and identity-related experiences, and how these intersect with family history, belonging, and sense of self.
Before training as a therapist, I spent over 20 years working in the corporate sector primarily as an HR specialist. This experience gives me a strong understanding of workplace pressure, responsibility, and burnout, as well as the longer-term impact that sustained stress can have on confidence, identity, and self-worth.
My training journey included foundational counselling skills and counselling studies, followed by diploma-level clinical training. I have also undertaken additional training in:
- Cultural competence and intercultural awareness, with a focus on culturally sensitive therapy that takes account of race, culture, identity, and social context.
- Crisis intervention through my work with the Shout Crisis Helpline, working with people experiencing suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, loneliness, and self-harm.
- Counselling and psychotherapy with LGBTQ+ clients, offering affirmative and inclusive therapy that recognises identity, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.
- Grief and bereavement training, informed by sensitive, non-prescriptive conversations that help people explore loss, remember relationships, and find ways of living with grief.
I am committed to ongoing professional development and reflective practice, ensuring that my work remains thoughtful, ethical, and responsive to each client I support.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
