About me

The counselling I provide offers you the time and space that so many of us need but often lack, especially when life becomes hard or you feel less able to cope as you once did.

With me you can begin to tell your story at your own pace, we can explore what it is that has brought you to counselling and together we can establish some aims for you to work towards, to help you move forward and see the change in your life that you are hoping for.

You may be struggling with depression, low mood, anxiety, low self-esteem, a relationship breakdown, bereavement, or perhaps there is no label that can best describe where you are at right now. Whatever the case and wherever you are at, I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment for you to begin your counselling journey.

I work from a comfortable counselling room situated in the City Centre of York.  I have nearly 10 years experience working with clients within a short time frame (6-12 sessions), as well as providing sessions on a more long-term basis.

I am trained in the Humanistic perspective of counselling and psychotherapy and have nearly 15 years’ of experience working in the mental health field. I work primarily from a Person-centred approach, whilst integrating other therapies such as CBT and theories that suggest our past experiences have an impact on our lives now. I also feel comfortable working with issues of faith and spirituality.

I appreciate that reaching out to seek help and talk about how you feel can be a really big step for some. If this is you and you have some initial reservations or questions please feel free to contact me; it is important that you find a counsellor you feel comfortable with.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Additional information

  • I offer a free introductory call of up to 20 minutes, for you to talk about what’s led you to search for a counsellor, for you to ask any questions you may have and to help you decide whether you would like to try a counselling session with me.
  • Your first session will be an initial assessment and last for 1 hour. It will help both you and I to establish whether I am the best person to support you in counselling at this time in your life and if so it will be the place we can put a plan together going forward to help you with your needs.
  • Apart from the free initial 20 minute telephone appointment, all sessions last for 1 hour and are £50. There is no advanced commitment you have to make for any number of sessions. I do initiate a review every 6 sessions so we can both see any progress that has been made, and whether or not any further sessions would be helpful.
  • I do offer a concessions rate; please feel free to contact me for more details on this.
