About me

Hi, I’m Sarah.

I offer warm, honest and relational counselling for people who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, grieving, or unsure how to move forward.

Life can bring all sorts of struggles, and sometimes it can feel difficult to talk to family or friends about how you are really feeling. You may be carrying grief, sadness, guilt, anger, confusion, anxiety or low self-esteem. Counselling can offer a space to slow things down and begin to make sense of what is happening for you.

My approach is humanistic and relational. This means I see you as the expert on your own life. I won’t tell you what to do, but I will sit alongside you while we explore what you are feeling, what you have experienced, and what may feel difficult in your life or relationships.

My aim is to offer a warm, grounded space where we can make sense of what is happening for you, together. I will listen carefully, respond honestly, and work with you as a person, not a problem to be solved.

I work with a range of life’s difficulties, with a particular specialism in grief, loss and bereavement. Grief can feel very lonely, and it does not always look the way people expect. Whether your loss is recent or happened some time ago, we can make space for whatever you are feeling, at your pace.

I'm qualified counsellor with a BA (Hons) in Counselling and a registered member of the BACP. Alongside my private practice, I work as a Service Lead within a bereavement counselling charity, and I am currently training as a counselling supervisor, which continues to deepen my reflective and ethical practice.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have over 10 years’ experience as a therapist, working across private practice, bereavement services, young adult counselling and Place2Be, supporting primary school children.

Alongside my private practice, I'm the Service Lead at a bereavement counselling charity, supporting people through grief, loss and some of the hardest times in their lives.

I also have experience in forensic mental health and in care work with people with profound learning disabilities. These experiences have shaped the way I work and deepened my belief in meeting people as they are, with patience, honesty and respect.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

The first session with me will be a little different from ongoing counselling sessions. It is a chance for us to meet, talk about what has brought you to counselling, and think about what you might want from the sessions.

This first session will include an assessment, so I may ask more questions than I would usually ask later on. These might include questions about what is happening for you now, your background, any support you already have in place, and anything important around safety, risk or confidentiality.

It is also a chance for you to get a sense of how I work and to ask any questions you may have. We can then decide together whether it feels like we are a good fit.

Sessions after this are usually less directive and more led by you. We'll go at your pace and start with whatever feels most important. You don’t need to come with everything worked out, or know exactly what you want to say. Sometimes we might talk about what is happening in your life now, and other times we may find ourselves thinking about earlier experiences, relationships, or patterns that keep coming up.

I'll listen carefully and may reflect back what I'm hearing, gently notice things that feel important, or wonder with you about what may be going on. I won’t tell you what to do, but together we can begin to understand what is happening for you.
