About me

Effective psychotherapy helps us to notice what we’re doing in our lives, and what we’re trying to do, and it reconciles us with the thoughts and feelings we try our best to wish away. In the end life is difficult, simply because reality won’t behave as we’d like it to, but if it goes well, an analytic treatment really can help a person to live.

My consulting room is in commercial premises in central Manchester. I ask you to come at the same time every week, and this appointment time is reserved just for you.  I also work twice or three times weekly, again in agreed session times. For the work to be effective it is best to attend every session. The work takes place in terms, similar to academic terms. It can show benefits quite early but its main effect comes over time and a good therapy will help you to develop and grow after the conclusion of treatment.

Coming for a preliminary session or two is the best way to judge whether this approach might be helpful to you. If you’re interested, then please, send me an email and we can arrange an appointment.

Training, qualifications & experience

In 2017 I was awarded the North West Diploma in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, from the North-West Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy. This was a UKCP-accredited training. I have since become registered with the BPC and I am a professional member of the British Psychotherapy Foundation.

I have a lot of clinical and scholarly experience.

UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Further information

It may be that there are things you want and need that always escape you, or that  there are things you fear which seem overwhelming. It can be terribly hard to get reality to take account of our desires and aversions, and this is a big part of what we think about in a psychodynamic therapy. A successful treatment can help you to strengthen your sense of self so that you can approach life with a sense of purpose, and with a reasonable degree of mental vigour and agility.

We start with an initial consultation, which can be extended over several weeks, in which we consider what you're looking for, and I explain the demands and boundaries of the therapy. In the therapy, your task is simply to say what is in your mind, while my task is to listen and wait for a comment from time to time when I believe I have something constructive to offer you. If I am silent and do not speak for a while, that's only because it takes time for the right comment to come to mind.
