About me

"I should be over this by now."
"I don't want to burden my family."
"No one understands."
"Is it normal to still feel like this?"

“I’m crying all the time is this normal?” or “I’m not crying at all is this normal”?

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Grief can leave you exhausted, overwhelmed and carrying feelings that you can't really say out loud: sadness, anger, regret, and often guilt and shame.

Guilt about what you did or didn't do and shame about how you're grieving, or how long it's affecting you, you are worried you should ‘be over’ this by now. There’s also a sense that the people around you just don't understand what you've lost.

You don’t want to keep talking to those around you about your loss as you just feel you are constantly burdening them with your sadness.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

How counselling can help:

Counselling gives you the place you need where you don't have to hold it all together. You don't need to protect me from your darkest thoughts as when we work together, the things that feel unspeakable can be spoken about and understood, including the thoughts of not wanting to be here and just wanting to be with your loved one.

Through our work together, you may begin to:

  • feel lighter, because you're no longer carrying everything alone
  • talk openly without worrying about burdening family or friends
  • discover that other people feel this way too, and that you're not "doing grief wrong"
  • feel that your grief, anger, guilt and shame have been heard and understood
  • notice small glimmers of hope and life again
  • laugh or feel joy without feeling guilty
  • learn to carry your grief while continuing to live

When we work together, there's no pressure to move on from your grief or to "fix" it. Grief can change you as a person, your friendships and relationships, and your sense of identity. It's a whole-body experience that affects you emotionally, mentally and physically.

By reaching out, you can be assured that you don't have to find your way through this alone. Together, we can make sense of your grief and find some hope, even in the darkest times.

Why me:

I'm Kate Nudds, a grief counsellor based in Ipswich, Suffolk.

Alongside my private practice, I work as a counsellor in a hospice, supporting people living with life-limiting illness, their carers, and bereaved families. I began as a grief coach before training as a counsellor. Having both means I can support you wherever you are: whether you need the space to process painful feelings, or perhaps are ready for more practical steps to rebuild. No two people grieve in the same way, so I draw on different counselling approaches and shape our work around what you need.

The grief journey can be long and unpredictable, but together we can find the glimmers in your day again.
