About me
I am an integrative cognitive behavioural therapist (CBT) with a psychology master’s degree and a background in the performing arts. I draw from different therapeutic approaches and offer a set of strategies to help you understand and change obstructive thinking patterns in a calm, supportive and non-judgemental environment. We will work together to dismantle limiting beliefs about yourself which are holding you back, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope with everyday life.
We can talk through issues that have grown into barriers preventing you from living the life you want to lead or being the person you want to be, and discuss what has been weighing you down. Together we will build your resilience, using CBT tools tailored to your specific needs to navigate your unique situation. You may feel you are being held back, emotionally and professionally, by issues that can be hard to define. By identifying these difficulties and addressing them we can help take the handbrake off and provide the guidance and encouragement you need to move forward with a life of fulfilment. The focus is on solutions and achievable goals.
I have come to this work from a background as a freelance musician, coach and instrumental teacher. I became aware of pervasive problems in the industry, such as performance anxiety, job insecurity, imposter syndrome, low self-esteem, perfectionism, procrastination, bullying, depression, and addiction. These same challenges are found in other walks of life, particularly in high-pressure, high-stress jobs. These are the very environments where people feel least able to talk about their problems, sometimes because they feel they should be able to resolve them on their own or other times because they feel these problems shouldn’t exist at all.
Dealing with everyday challenges will be one area to focus on, but my life experiences have also prepared me to work with you through crises - if you are struggling with cancer or other life-changing medical diagnoses, supporting autistic family members or coming to terms with end-of-life care and bereavement. I instinctively understand what it is like to face these dramatic life events, having lived through them myself and come out stronger on the other side.
My professional background includes work with Barnardo’s, the National Children’s Home (now Action For Children), pupil referral units where I was helping young adults who had fallen through the cracks at school. At the other end of the education system, I have been a visiting coach at the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban. More recently I worked for Anxiety UK and am currently in private practice. Over thirty years of fruitful collaboration with all ages and abilities has given me an understanding of the effort, dedication and partnership necessary to make critical steps forward, in art and in life.
