About me

Choosing a therapist is a big deal and it's natural to wonder whether therapy really works, so don't just take my word for it. I'm proud to have over 30 five-star Google reviews from people who have trusted me with some of the most difficult periods of their lives. Their words say far more about what it's like to work with me than I ever could, so if hearing from others helps, I'd invite you to start there – here’s the link: https://tinyurl.com/y4sj7uku

If you're here, chances are you've been trying hard to cope on your own. Perhaps you're telling yourself you should be coping better, that you should have moved on by now or that everyone else seems to be managing fine. Maybe people around you think you're okay, but inside you feel anxious, exhausted or not quite like yourself anymore.

You may find yourself replaying what happened, feeling on edge, avoiding reminders or wondering why something that happened months or even years ago still affects you so much. Whatever brought you here, whether it's a difficult birth, a loss, a frightening medical experience or simply life feeling too much right now, I’m here to help.

I'm Julie, a BACP Accredited Counsellor, Clinical Supervisor and EMDR Therapist with over a decade of experience supporting people through trauma, loss and the emotional weight that life sometimes brings. I have 8 years' experience working within an NHS counselling setting and 12 years in private practice. Much of my work has a particular focus on miscarriage & baby loss, pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, but I work just as closely with anyone finding their way through trauma, anxiety, grief or a difficult life transition, whatever that looks like for you.

I offer a calm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly, feel really heard and begin to make sense of what you've been through. Together, we work at your pace to help you move forward in a way that feels right for you.

Areas I specialise in:

  • Trauma and PTSD (of any kind)
  • Birth trauma
  • Miscarriage, baby loss and infertility
  • Pregnancy after loss (Rainbow Pregnancy)
  • Antenatal and postnatal anxiety
  • Difficult or distressing medical experiences
  • Anxiety and overwhelming feelings
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Relationship difficulties in the postpartum period
  • Life transitions

EMDR Therapy

Many people come to me because they feel stuck.

Perhaps memories keep replaying in your mind, you feel constantly on high alert or something inside you has changed since what happened. You may wonder why you can't simply put it behind you or why talking about it doesn't seem to make it go away.

I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based therapy recommended by the Government's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for trauma. EMDR helps the brain process distressing experiences so that memories lose their emotional intensity and no longer have the same hold over you.

You do not need to tell your story over and over again to recover.

For those who want a more focused approach, I also offer one and two-day EMDR Intensives, either online or in person in South Devon. These extended sessions can be particularly helpful if you're feeling desperate to move forward, have limited time for weekly therapy or simply want to dedicate uninterrupted time to your healing. Many clients combine an intensive with a relaxing break in Devon, giving themselves permission to step away from everyday life and focus entirely on recovery.

My approach

My approach is warm and collaborative. I integrate EMDR with person-centred and relational approaches such as Transactional Analysis, tailoring therapy to your individual needs. I believe therapy works best when you feel comfortable enough to bring your whole self into the room, without fear of judgement or pressure. You don't have to have the right words, hold it all together, or explain everything perfectly. Whether you are grieving, struggling with anxiety, processing trauma or trying to reconnect with yourself, we will work together with compassion and care.

Sessions

I offer therapy in person in Newton Abbot, Devon and online across the UK.

If you're unsure whether therapy is right for you, I offer a free 15-minute telephone appointment. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions, tell me a little about what's been happening and see whether we feel like the right fit.

You don't have to keep getting through each day on your own; healing is possible, hope is possible! And with the right support, things really can feel different.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
