About me

BACP Accredited Counsellor, Clinical Supervisor & EMDR Therapist

Choosing a therapist is a big decision, so it's natural to wonder whether therapy will really help.

Rather than simply telling you what it's like to work with me, I'd encourage you to hear from the people who have trusted me with some of the hardest times in their lives. I'm proud to have over 30 five-star Google reviews, and their experiences often say far more than I ever could. If you'd like to read them, you can do so here: https://tinyurl.com/y4sj7uku

Maybe you've been telling yourself you should be coping better, or everyone else thinks you're doing fine, but inside you're feeling anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted or simply not like yourself anymore.

You may find yourself replaying something that happened, feeling constantly on edge, avoiding reminders or wondering why an experience from months or even years ago still has such a powerful impact.

Whatever has brought you here, I can help.

I'm Julie, a BACP Accredited Counsellor, Clinical Supervisor and EMDR Therapist with over a decade of experience helping people recover from trauma, loss, anxiety and difficult life experiences. I spent eight years working within NHS counselling services alongside my private practice, where I've supported clients for over 12 years. When I'm not supporting people with their emotional wellbeing you will probably find me with my nose in a book, or walking Stan, my Jack Russell Terrier (he certainly enjoys welcoming my clients and making sure that they are escorted off of the premises!).

While I have a particular specialist interest in pregnancy, birth, miscarriage, baby loss and the transition to parenthood, I also work extensively with people who have experienced all kinds of trauma, grief, anxiety, distressing medical experiences and major life changes. You don't have to be a parent or have experienced pregnancy, for us to work together.

My aim is to provide a space where you feel heard and understood.  It is not my job to give you advice, or suggest what you should do. Instead, together we'll make sense of what's happened, reduce the impact it's having on your life and I'll help you move forward at a pace that feels right for you.

Areas I commonly help with:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Birth trauma
  • Miscarriage and baby loss
  • Pregnancy after loss (Rainbow Pregnancy)
  • Fertility and infertility
  • Antenatal and postnatal anxiety
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Distressing medical experiences
  • Bereavement and grief
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Low self-esteem
  • Life transitions
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • EMDR Therapy

Many people come to me because they feel stuck. You may feel as though your mind keeps returning to the same memories, your body is constantly on high alert, or something has never quite felt the same since what happened, and you might wonder why talking about it hasn't helped as much as you'd hoped, or why you can't simply move on.

I offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based therapy recommended by NICE for the treatment of trauma. EMDR helps the brain process distressing experiences so that memories lose their emotional intensity and no longer feel as overwhelming.

One of the things many clients appreciate about EMDR is that you don't have to repeatedly tell your story in detail for therapy to be effective.

Alongside regular therapy sessions, I also offer one and two-day EMDR Intensives, either online or from my practice in South Devon. Intensives can be particularly helpful if you want to make significant progress in a shorter period of time, are travelling from further afield, or simply prefer an immersive approach to therapy. Some clients choose to combine their intensive with a restorative break in Devon, giving themselves dedicated time and space to focus entirely on their wellbeing.

My approach

No two people experience life in exactly the same way, so I believe therapy should never be one-size-fits-all so my work is warm, collaborative and tailored to you. Alongside EMDR, I integrate person-centred counselling and relational approaches, including Transactional Analysis, depending on what feels most helpful for your needs.

You don't have to know exactly what's wrong, have the right words, or keep everything together. Whether you're processing trauma, grieving a loss, struggling with anxiety or navigating a difficult stage of life, we'll work together with compassion, honesty and care.

Sessions

I offer counselling and EMDR therapy: In person in Newton Abbot, Devon and online throughout the UK.

If you're unsure whether I'm the right therapist for you, I offer a free 15-minute telephone conversation. It's an opportunity for us to talk about what's been happening, answer any questions you have, and help you decide whether we'd be a good fit.

Healing is possible. With the right support, life can begin to feel different again and you don't have to get there on your own.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
