About me
Hello, I'm Julia. I provide therapy for children and young people as well as therapeutic support for parents.
I am a BACP Registered Child Therapist with a background in the creative arts and specialist training in Mentalisation Based Therapy for Children. I work one to one with children in a safe and nurturing environment using play, art, story and talking.
Children tell me they like coming to therapy and, although we can sometimes look at difficult emotions, it can also feel fun. Therapy goes at the child's pace and puts them and their needs at the very heart of all the work.
Experience:
I have nearly 30 years experience working with children and young people presenting with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties in the home and/or school environment. I currently work as a therapist with children and young people from 5-18 in a local charity as well as in private practice.
I have extensive experience working with children managing all sorts of issues such as anxiety, low self esteem, bereavement, school anxiety, parental separation, emotional regulation, anger, friendship issues and more... I have specialist knowledge around abuse, trauma and attachment, and work closely with the Local Authority and Independent Fostering and Adoption sector to support children who are unable to live with their birth family.
I am also an experienced trainer and facilitator.
Work with Parents:
My therapeutic work with children always includes some sessions with parents/carers, so we can work together to support your child. The therapeutic support for parents and carers aims to help understand what might be going on for your child and also give you the space to understand what you can do to help. Parenting is tough and the vast majority of people do their very best, but we all need a bit of support at times.
I occasionally run small groups for parents over 4 weeks to look at the principles of neuroscience and attachment, the importance of play and share some ideas of ways to connect and chat to children. These groups are friendly, fun, and informative, and families benefit from hearing from others. If interested send me an email and I will let you know when the next group will run.
Practice Information:
My therapy room is a calm, safe space in a beautiful wellbeing centre in Newport. Easy to reach and a lovely waiting room for parents/carers to relax!
I practice with an integrative approach using the creative arts to communicate and connect with children and young people, as well as mentalization based therapy for children and DDP-informed (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy) practice. If you haven't heard of these feel free to reach out and I will happily tell you all about them.
What next?:
Step 1: I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation to discuss your child's presenting issue. We can see whether we feel I am a good fit for your child and discuss practicalities.
Step 2: Assessment session/s followed by therapeutic intervention.
Sessions are weekly at the same time, same place, for 50mins each and the number of sessions is agreed at the start of the therapy and reviewed regularly.
I understand that seeking support can feel a big step so please feel free to reach out and ask any questions you may have.

Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
