About me

Hi, I am Josie, a Relate trained counsellor, specialising in loss and grief and relationship difficulties.   Many relationships struggle with communication and behavioural issues, especially during life transitions - adjusting to living together, having a baby, infidelity, loss, bereavement, menopause, and aging.

I find the main issues that couples experience are misunderstandings and unmet expectations.  There is sometimes an element of the impact of neurodiversity on the relationship.  Unrealistic expectations may come from scripts learned in families of origin - different thoughts about how relationships should be can bring you into conflict.    A non-judgemental counsellor can help to bring realisation that there is usually no right or wrong answer to a question.  Rather than understanding how you might both believe that your answer is the right one and needing to make the other person see this at all costs these misunderstandings leave both of you hurt and metaphorically bruised by the experience.

I use a pluralistic approach, combining my training in systemic (how your family, community, country and other aspects of your origins impact your beliefs and behaviours); psychodynamic (psychotherapeutic - how early life and other experiences can affect your brain); person-centred (therapy tailored to your individual needs) and cognitive-behavioural therapy  (how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are interlinked) as well as life coaching (what you want more/less of in your life), to work in the most appropriate way for the difficulties clients are facing. I work collaboratively with clients to evaluate the progress of the therapy and work towards an agreed ending.
