About me
Hello, I’m Jo. I’m a warm, down-to-earth and thoughtful therapist, and I care deeply about creating a space where people feel safe enough to be themselves.
I believe therapy works best when you feel genuinely heard and understood. I aim to offer a calm, steady presence — somewhere you don’t have to perform, minimise your feelings, or have everything figured out. You can bring uncertainty, frustration, sadness, anger or confusion, and we can make sense of it together.
My approach is relational and collaborative. I don’t see therapy as something that is “done” to you. Instead, we work side by side, exploring patterns, experiences and emotions with curiosity and compassion. I draw on different therapeutic ideas depending on what feels most helpful, always adapting to you as an individual rather than following a fixed formula.
I work at a pace that feels manageable. Sometimes that means gently sitting with difficult feelings; sometimes it means carefully challenging patterns that may be keeping you stuck. I aim to balance warmth with honesty, offering both support and thoughtful reflection.
I am particularly attuned to themes of attachment, identity, loss and family complexity. I understand how early relationships and life experiences can continue to shape how we see ourselves and relate to others. Where relevant, we can explore these links in a way that feels safe and containing.
I also work in a neuro-affirming way with autistic and ADHD adults and young people. I respect different ways of processing, communicating and experiencing the world, and I aim to create a space where difference is understood rather than judged.
Above all, I strive to offer a therapeutic space that feels human, respectful and steady — somewhere you can begin to feel less alone in what you’re carrying.
If you’re considering therapy, you’re very welcome to get in touch. You can contact me by email to ask any questions, or arrange an initial phone call so we can briefly talk through what you’re looking for and see whether working together feels like the right fit. Taking that first step can feel daunting, but you don’t have to have everything figured out before you reach out.

Integrative Counselling for Adults, Young People and Children
Life can feel overwhelming at times. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, low mood, burnout, relationship difficulties, grief, or simply feeling stuck, therapy can offer a space to pause, reflect and make sense of what is happening.
I am an integrative, relational counsellor offering a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental therapeutic space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace. I work with adults, young people and children, with adults forming a central part of my practice.
Working with Adults
Many of the adults I work with come to therapy at a point where coping is no longer enough. They may have spent years managing, pushing through and putting others first, only to find themselves feeling exhausted, overwhelmed or disconnected from themselves.
You may be struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, burnout, grief, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, people-pleasing patterns, life transitions or the impact of difficult past experiences. Perhaps you find yourself constantly overthinking, worrying about others, struggling to switch off, or feeling as though you are carrying more than you can manage. You may appear capable on the outside whilst feeling very different underneath.
Sometimes there is a clear reason for seeking therapy. At other times, there is simply a sense that something is not quite right and needs attention.
Therapy with me offers a consistent, containing space where you do not have to perform, manage or minimise your experience. Together, we can explore what may be shaping your current difficulties, whether rooted in present circumstances or earlier life experiences, and work towards greater understanding, self-compassion and meaningful change.
I offer both short-term focused work and longer-term, open-ended therapy. Many adult clients choose ongoing work, allowing space for deeper exploration, reflection and growth over time.
You Don’t Need to Be in Crisis
You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling.
Many people come to therapy because they want a better understanding of themselves, healthier relationships, greater confidence, clearer boundaries, or simply a space that is theirs alone.
Therapy can be valuable whether you are facing a significant life challenge or seeking personal growth, self-awareness and a deeper connection with yourself.
How I Work
My approach is integrative and relational. Rather than working from a single model, I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches and tailor the work to your individual needs.
The therapeutic relationship itself is central to my practice. I believe meaningful change happens when people feel genuinely heard, understood and accepted.
Clients often tell me they value having a space where they can speak openly without feeling judged, rushed or expected to have all the answers.
I work at a pace that feels steady and considered. Alongside reflection and insight, there is space for challenge, honesty and careful exploration of patterns that may be keeping you stuck. My aim is not simply symptom reduction, but helping you develop greater self-awareness, self-acceptance and more authentic ways of living and relating.
Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice
I have particular experience supporting neurodivergent adults, including autistic and ADHD clients, and I work in a neuro-affirming and respectful way.
For many neurodivergent adults, therapy becomes a space to explore masking, burnout, late diagnosis, sensory overwhelm, identity, self-acceptance and the impact of years spent feeling misunderstood or different.
Rather than viewing neurodivergence as something that needs to be fixed, I focus on helping clients better understand themselves, recognise their strengths, navigate challenges and create sustainable ways of living that work for them.
My practice remains equally welcoming to neurotypical clients seeking a grounded and reflective therapeutic space.
Experience with Attachment, Identity and Family Complexity
Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years as a foster carer, adopter and special guardian. These experiences deepened my understanding of attachment, trauma, identity, family relationships, loss and the lasting impact of early experiences.
While every person’s story is unique, this background helps me bring both professional knowledge and real-world understanding to my work.
I am particularly interested in how early relationships and life experiences can continue to shape self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and relationship patterns in adulthood. Where relevant, we can gently explore these themes and their influence on your present life.
Working with Children and Young People
Alongside my adult practice, I continue to support children and young people experiencing a range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including anxiety, trauma, OCD, low self-esteem, shame, anger, abuse, bereavement and emotional regulation difficulties.
I previously worked as a school counsellor within a specialist SEMH provision, supporting young people with complex emotional needs and life experiences.
My work with children and young people integrates creative and play-based approaches such as therapeutic play, sand tray work, games and creative activities, always tailored to the individual and delivered in a developmentally sensitive and ethically grounded way.

Taking the First Step
Starting therapy can feel like a significant step, and it is important that you find a counsellor who feels right for you.
I offer a free initial telephone consultation, giving you the opportunity to ask questions, discuss what brings you to therapy and decide whether working together feels like a good fit.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

My counselling room is based within Mexborough Business Centre, offering a calm, comfortable and confidential space where you can talk openly without fear of judgement. The centre benefits from plenty of free parking, fully accessible facilities, a reception area, toilet facilities and a small café, helping to make your visit as comfortable and welcoming as possible.
I aim to create an environment where you feel safe, respected and able to work at a pace that feels right for you. I believe that every person is unique, which is why I tailor therapy to your individual needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Building a trusting therapeutic relationship is at the heart of my work. Whether you are seeking support for a specific difficulty or looking for a space to better understand yourself, my aim is to help you feel genuinely heard, understood and supported as we work towards greater self-awareness, resilience and positive change.
You don't have to face things alone. Support is available, and taking the first step can be the beginning of something different.
